The Future of Cohesion Policy
The contributors to this volume explore the future of the European Union's Cohesion Policy, one of the main pillars of the EU budget. The 12 stand-alone chapters written by 15 leading experts are structured around four main topics: the policy's fundamental rationales in a changing environment, what is already known and gaps in knowledge regarding the economic impacts of the policy since its inception 30 years ago, the study of factors that enable…
Population Growth and Distribution in Australia
Over the next three decades, Australia's large cities are expected to experience major population growth, while many regional areas will likely be faced with shrinking and ageing populations. This paper asks how official population projections are considered in strategic spatial policy frameworks for Victoria and South Australia, and what land use planning responses are proposed to address increasing spatial disparities. The analysis shows that pol…
An international comparison of the scope and instruments of local spatial planning
This article analyses (based on multidimensional criteria) land-use plans at a local level (using selected cities as examples) and their relationships to crucial planning issues identified at both national and local levels. The planning approaches of cities from the following countries were compared: Australia, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, China, Ghana, Iran, Mexico, Mongolia, Portugal and Poland. These countries are diverse in terms of their legal, …
Investigating the policy tools of spatial planning
Spatial planning is a comprehensive field of public policy and characterized by a considerable diversity of policy tools. Some of these policy tools have a long tradition, but a broadening scope of spatial planning over recent decades in many liberal democracies, accompanied by policy reforms to the way in which spatial planning operates, has altered the nature and type of policy instruments in use. Previous analyses have given limited attention …
Understanding the lived experience and benefits of regional cities
This research investigates the lived experience of regional city residents (in five case studies) to understand how the benefits and disadvantages of regional city life are perceived and explore attitudes towards population growth.
Spatial Data Requirements for Metropolitan Spatial Planning in South Australia
Comprehensive spatial plans require a wide range of high quality spatial data, but planning requirements are not always considered in the increasing number of spatial data initiatives. This paper presents a framework for systematically analysing the availability and quality of spatial datasets in urban planning, and applies this to the example of the metropolitan strategy for Greater Adelaide, South Australia. The findings reveal significant gaps…
Social Learning in Transnational Spatial Planning Processes
Social learning can offer a useful lens to analyse multi-actor cooperation processes and their outcomes. In this paper, a conceptual framework based on learning theories is applied to a recent transnational spatial planning process in Central Europe to analyse how the cooperation agenda was shaped, a joint strategy developed, and to understand the possible policy effects of this process. The findings allow a reflection on the potentials of, and c…

European Spatial Planning and Territorial Cooperation
There is a strong international dimension to spatial planning. European integration strengthens interconnections, development and decision-making across national and regional borders. EU policies in areas such as environment, transport, agriculture or regional policy have far-reaching effects on spatial development patterns and planning procedures. Planners in the EU are now routinely engaged in cooperation across national borders to share and de…

Spatial policies for regional sustainable development
Dühr S. (2005) Spatial policies for regional sustainable development: a comparison of graphic and textual representations in regional plans in England and Germany, Regional Studies 39 , 1167–1182. Cartographic representation in strategic spatial plans can be a powerful tool for the communication of spatial policies to achieve sustainable development. Regional plans in England and Germany were analysed to identify the extent to which sustainable d…
The Form, Style, and Use of Cartographic Visualisations in European Spatial Planning
In most traditions of spatial planning in Europe, planning policy documents involve a symbolic representation of the territory in the form of icons, diagrams, and maps. There are, however, significant national and regional differences in the use of cartographic visualisations in strategic spatial planning in European countries, which can cause problems when several countries come together to discuss policy options for a transnational territory, a…
