Public unacceptability of carbon pricing, perceived costs and effectiveness of policy
Public acceptability is crucial for the effectiveness of policy implementation. The carbon trading market is widely adopted by many countries and regions to achieve carbon neutrality and mitigate climate change. Our paper utilizes China's carbon trading market as a quasi-natural experiment, drawing on microdata from the China Residential Energy Consumption Survey to analyze the policy's impact on public acceptance of carbon pricing. We find that …
The global burden, risk and inequality of maternal obstructed labor and uterine rupture from 1990 to 2019
This study highlights the significant burden of OL and UR and emphasizes the need for continuous efforts to reduce maternal mortality and morbidity. Understanding risk factors and addressing health inequalities are crucial for the development of effective interventions and policies to improve maternal health outcomes globally
Impact of the Belt and Road Initiative
This study investigates the macroeconomic impact of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) on Pakistan using the synthetic control method. Based on the panel data of 42 non-BRI countries, we construct a synthetic Pakistan to estimate the economic growth trend of the country without the BRI. By comparing the actual economy with the synthetic case, our results show that the BRI increases the annual per capita GDP growth rate of Pakistan from 3.04% to 4…

Changes in the Economic Structure and Trends in China’s Future Energy Demands
The scientific evaluation of trends in China’s future energy demands is highly important. Using provincial-level panel data from 1995 to 2015, we studied the relationships between the economic aggregate, the development of energy-intensive industries and energy demand from the perspective of changes in the proportion of energy-intensive industries in the national economy. We find that economic aggregate affects energy demand through energy-intens…
District heating versus self-heating
This paper employs regression discontinuity design to estimate the impact of heating modes on residents’ energy consumption, energy efficiency gap, and energy usage behavior, using the Chinese Residential Energy Consumption Survey (CRECS). We find that district heating increases total energy consumption and total heating expenditure. However, energy consumption and expenditure per unit of district heating are lower than self-heating, which means …
A New Perspective on Raising Energy Efficiency
A comparison of the facts at the micro- and macro-level indicates that although some Chinese enterprises are at the international frontier in terms of micro-level energy efficiency, overall energy efficiency at the industrial and national level is seriously lagging behind. Hypotheses based on a market segmentation framework indicate that this is because market segmentation inhibits energy efficiency through its effect on technical efficiency, sca…
Quantifying Energy Consumption in Household Surveys
The exercise of quantifying the energy consumption data assembled through household surveys, either by the recall-based approach or the meter-based approach, remains a challenging task, especially in rural areas of developing countries. In this article, we propose a device-based bottom-up accounting method for estimating household energy consumption. This method provides microlevel disaggregated estimates at the intensive margin and documents oth…
On the nexus of environmental quality and public spending on health care in China
Does pollution drive up public spending on health care? This paper aims to answer such a crucial question empirically using a panel data set of 31 Chinese provinces during the period 1997–2014. In particular, this paper explores the non-stationarity and cointegration properties between health care expenditure and environmental indicators in a panel cointegration framework; in doing so, it examines both the long-run and the short-run impacts of th…
On the supply of China's healthcare resources in a decentralized healthcare system
The structure of China’s current governance bears prominent features of fiscal decentralization. The supply of healthcare resources in China has clearly witnessed slower growth in the last two decades during which the fiscal decentralization process has taken place. Using China’s provincial panel data, we examine the determinants of healthcare resource supply while paying particular attention to the role of fiscal decentralization. We find that t…
On the determinants of public infrastructure spending in Chinese cities
In the context of fiscal decentralization, we use cross-sectional data of 242 Chinese cities in 2005 to explore the major factors contributing to the decline of public investment. The main finding is that a city government appears to reduce its own infrastructure spending as a response to the rise of infrastructure spending of its neighboring cities, revealing evidence of positive spillover effects of public infrastructure expenditure. This paper…
Taxation and economic performance
This paper empirically tests the effects of taxation on economic performance using prefectural level city and county data from China. Results based on cross-sectional data from over 200 prefectural cities in 2007 indicate that overall tax burden and tax structure affect economic performance. Specifically, tax burden has a negative correlation with economic activities. Empirical results from the analysis of disaggregated local data for over 2,000 …
