Outer space imaginaries: Deconstructing the privatization-securitization nexus
Outer space is increasingly the site of political tensions. At the same time, the growing role played by private actors in space creates opportunities and challenges for defence and security. This article aims to unravel how outer space imaginaries influence the practice and decisions regarding outer space (security) governance. Adopting a deconstructive approach informed by critical geopolitics, it identifies dominant and competing discourses ab…
Utilitarianism and weak sustainability: A corpus analysis of the representation of the sea by the UK Government (2010–2023)
This article explores how the sea is represented in the UK government’s communications by applying corpus linguistic analysis to textual data. The findings reveal a dominant discourse that frames the sea primarily as an economic asset, emphasizing investment and sustainable exploitation understood as resource preservation. Emotional and social dimensions of sustainability are noticeably underrepresented, while narratives surrounding the sea are s…
Media coverage of the blue economy in British newspapers: Sea blindness and sustainable development
The wide acceptance and endorsement of the blue economy by public and private actors can be considered as a positive step towards the sustainable transition of coastal and marine environments. While particular attention needs to be paid to the potential risks posed by the perspective of economic gains resulting from marine exploitation, a large public support is also required to build a sustainable society. The mass media plays a critical role in…
Waves of contention: Framing the complexity of unresolved EU maritime boundary disputes
European Union (EU) responses to maritime boundary disputes reveal certain paradoxes of governance. The increasing interest of EU states in controlling larger maritime areas and the public and private exploitation of marine and seabed resources are enhancing the territorialization of the sea. The EU as a political project claims to transcend state-vested interests, promoting peaceful dispute resolution when it comes to maritime boundary disputes.…
Climate change and maritime security narrative: The case of the international maritime organisation
Both climate change and maritime security are currently ranking high on states' and international organisations' political and governance agendas. However, academics and practitioners alike have hardly tackled the actual interlinkages and dependencies between the two issues. Taking the International Maritime Organization (IMO) as a case study, this article pioneers the use of corpus linguistic method to unravel the nonexistence of a narrative lin…

Re-Thinking European Security Interests and the ESDP: Explaining the EU's Anti-Piracy Operation
After years of debate and planning, in 2003 the European Union began to launch a variety of foreign security operations under the rubric of its European Security and Defence Policy (ESDP). These ef
Multinational Military Cooperation and its Challenges: The Case of European Naval Operations in the Wider Mediterranean Area
In order to cope with current security challenges, such as regional conflicts, humanitarian disasters or terrorist threats, European states in the post-Cold War era make important use of naval forces within a complex multilateral framework. However, the issues relating to European navies have rarely been tackled in the literature on multilateral military cooperation. Therefore this article aims to fill the gap by studying the nature of the Europe…
