  • The Hydroclimatonomy of a Developing Tropical Island

    Orman E Granger•ARTICLE•Annals of the Association of…•1983•References: 4

Rainfall distribution, streamflow characteristics, and rainfall-runoff relationships in Trinidad, West Indies, are investigated using measured hydroclimatological variables to provide information crucial to the planning and development of the country's water resources and to an understanding of the ecological impacts of manipulating the hydroclimatic system during a period of rapid industrial development, rural-urban migration, and population gro…

  • Recent Rainfall Trends on the Margins of the Subtropical Deserts

    Open Access•Roger Byrne, Orman E Granger et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1982

An analysis of recent (1898–1972) seasonal rainfall data from California (winter) and Mexico (summer) provides no evidence of an inverse relationship such as has been reported by Winstanley for climatically analogous areas of Eurasia and Africa. However, California and Old World winter rain trends have been remarkably similar during this time period. Also, summer rain in northwestern Mexico (Mazatlan) correlates highly with winter rainfall in sou…

  • Climatic Variations and the California Raisin Industry

    Open Access•Orman E Granger•ARTICLE•Geographical Review•1980•Cited by: 1

IN the central San Joaquin Valley of California, raisins are made from grapes by processing them on paper trays under the open sky in the vineyards. Drying of the raisin grapes begins after harvest in late August and lasts until approximately the second week in October. The critical drying period is the month of September, during which the grapes may be damaged if they are moistened by rains of as little as 0.25 millimeters. The whole crop can be…

  • Increasing Variability in California Precipitation∗

Orman E Granger, ORMAN GRANGER•ARTICLE•Annals of the Association of…•1979•Cited by: 2

Most of California experienced the severest dry spell on record in 1976–77; 1978 was one of its wettest rainy seasons. The economic and environmental impacts of the drought were significant. Comparisons of nonoverlapping, twenty-year periods between 1921 and 1977 produced few statistically significant differences in either means or variances. The probability of occurrence of extreme seasonal precipitation increased in the northern two-thirds of t…
