The Importance of the Journal's Reviewers
In a public letter prominent geographer and editor, Nigel Thrift (2011), observes the growing problem of the reluctance of academics to review submissions for publication in journals. Thrift guesses at three explanations for this reluctance: the proliferation of journals, competing requests from research bodies to review funding applications, and the burden of workload in universities more generally. Thrift's note refers us to an editorial in Env…

The Coast of Australia – By Andrew D. Short and Colin D. Woodroffe
Role of Infragravity Energy in Bar Formation in a Strong‐Wind Bay
Measurements of the surf zone wave field and morphology were obtained from a multi‐barred beach in a fetch‐limited, strong‐wind bay (Seaford, southeastern Australia) during both low‐ and high‐energy conditions. Analysis of the infragravity energy present during high‐energy events (onshore winds >7 ms −1 ) revealed that it was broad‐banded, consisting of a mixture of standing and progressive motions and displaying daily variations in standing wave…
Australian Rock Coasts
Studies of Australian rock coasts (except carbonate reefs) are reviewed and considered in view of recent process and morphological studies. The unique nature of the Australian coast, its geographical distribution and relative stability mean that it is a productive environment in which to research fundamental questions concerning rock coasts. Future research directions are identified, specifically in the areas of processes, morphology and modellin…
