Ralph Owen Slatyer 1929–2012
Ralph Slatyer (16 April 1929–26 July 2012) had a distinguished career in the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation and the Australian National University, in plant-water relations and plant succession, leading the development of physiological plant ecology. He was the founding Professor of Environmental Biology at the Research School of Biological Sciences, at the Australian National University and then Director of the Rese…
Pan Evaporation Trends and the Terrestrial Water Balance. II. Energy Balance and Interpretation
Declines in pan evaporation have been reported across the USA, former Soviet Union, India, China, Australia, New Zealand and Canada, among other places. The trend is large – approximately an order of magnitude larger than model‐based estimates of top of the atmosphere radiative forcing. The pan evaporation trend also has a different sign (i.e. decline) from commonly held conceptions. These are a remarkably interesting set of observations. In the …
Pan Evaporation Trends and the Terrestrial Water Balance. I. Principles and Observations
Pan evaporation is just that – it is the evaporation rate of water from a small dish located at the ground‐surface. Pan evaporation is a measure of the evaporative demand over terrestrial surfaces. Declines in pan evaporation have now been reported in many regions of the world. The trends vary from one pan to the next, but when averaged over many pans, they are typically in the range of −1 to −4 mm a −2 (mm per annum per annum). In energetic term…
Carbon isotope discrimination by plants follows latitudinal and altitudinal trends
Carbon Isotope Discrimination and Photosynthesis
We discuss the physical and enzymatic bases of carbone isotope discrimination during photosynthesis, noting how knowledge of discrimination can be used to provide additional insight into photosynthetic metabolism and the environmental influences on that process
On the Relationship Between Carbon Isotope Discrimination and the Intercellular Carbon Dioxide Concentration in Leaves
Theory is developed to explain the carbon isotopic composition of plants. It is shown how diffusion of gaseous CO2 can significantly affect carbon isotopic discrimination. The effects on discrimination by diffusion and carboxylation are integrated, yielding a simple relationship between discrimination and the ratio of the intercellular and atmospheric partial pressures of CO2. The effects of dark respiration and photorespiration are also consider…
A biochemical model of photosynthetic CO2 assimilation in leaves of C3 species
