Developing techniques for the teaching and assessment of writing in the Spanish heritage language classroom through critical pedagogies
Fighting the Standardized Norm
Hispanic Linguistics Instruction
Despite the increasing demand for Hispanic Linguistics courses in Spanish programs across US universities, there is scarce research on how to implement communicative and content-based instruction. This article introduces an overview of best practices for introductory courses on Hispanic Linguistics with a focus on problem-solving activities and collaborative learning since instructors must always have in mind the course objectives; in the same ve…
Teaching during Covid-19
Latinx who do not feel confident speaking Spanish are usually questioned. To fight these ideologies, Pascual and Cabo and Prada (2018) suggest new pedagogical approaches to incorporate in the curriculum the experiences of the heritage language learner (HLL). Latinx in higher education expect a culturally relevant curriculum to critically listen and speak to challenge the hierarchies that marginalize them. Why is social justice education key? To m…
Ideologías de lenguaje en la instrucción e identidad del español de herencia
Las ideologías relacionadas con la identidad latinx son centrales en la instrucción de la lengua de herencia (LH) (Leeman et al., 2011). Sin embargo, la instrucción de herencia temprana estaba enfocada principalmente en adquirir la norma estándar (Leeman, 2012). ¿Cuáles son las ideologías actuales tanto en el aula de segunda lengua (SL) del español como en la de herencia? The impact of study abroad on Spanish heritage language learners
Even though study abroad programs in Spanish-speaking countries are increasingly popular, there are hardly any programs specifically designed for Spanish heritage language learners (Beaudrie, Ducar, & Potowski, 2014 Beaudrie, S. M., Ducar, C., & Potowski, K. (2014). Heritage language teaching: Research and practice. New York, NY: McGraw-Hill Education. [Google Scholar]). However, there are many heritage language learners who still choose a Hispan…
Meeting Student Needs
Despite the increase of Spanish heritage language (HL) courses in response to the linguistic needs of HL learners, these courses often combine this student population with advanced second language (L2) learners. This common scenario presents a challenge to many instructors who lack the training to negotiate intercultural and linguistic issues in the classroom so that all students can benefit. This essay presents key intercultural concerns (e.g., …
Social influence in the use of the present perfect in Bilbao
The Present Perfect (PP) in some Peninsular Spanish dialects is following the same path as other Romance languages; it is going through a grammaticalization process where the PP is usurping the semantic domains of the Preterite. This is the case of many Peninsular dialects such as Alicante (Schwenter, 1994) and Madrid (Serrano, 1994) among others as well as Bilbao (Kempas, 2005). He found that the frequencies of PPs in hodiernal contexts were hig…
A Case of Grammaticalization in the Use of the Perfect for the Preterite in Bilbao Spanish
Research into the use of the Present Perfect in various Romance languages often finds that the Present Perfect is taking over functions previously accomplished through the Preterite. This is also the case in Peninsular Spanish. A key constraint on the alternation of the Present Perfect and the Preterite involves the time-frame distinction of “today” versus “before-today”. Among the various dialects of Spanish spoken in Spain, the regional dialect …
