Personal Testimonials and Empathy in Environmental Risk Communication—Their Effects on Reflective Thoughts, Risk Perception, and Behavioral Intentions
Environmental risks related to climate change are on the rise worldwide. This study examines how empathy with personal testimonials of homeowners affected by such risks can stimulate reflective thoughts, risk perception, and intention to take protective measures. A sample of homeowners saw risk awareness videos about different types of environmental risks (storm, hail), with or without personal testimonials of homeowners affected by those risks. …
How News Websites Refer to Twitter
The study presents the results of a standardized content analysis comparing the use of Twitter as an information source on the websites of five news media types (quality newspapers, a tabloid newspaper, weekly magazines, broadcasters, and internet only). The theoretical assumption behind the study is that the adoption of Twitter as a source follows the established practices of a particular media type. All articles published online by ten German n…
Putting oceans to work
Aspirations to convert the movement of ebb and flow into electricity have a long and checkered history. Proposals for tidal power plants at Passamaquoddy Bay (Maine/New Brunswick) and in the Soviet Murmansk region emerged in the 1920s and were discussed well into the 1960s. Considering that tidal power had to compete with established energy sources like coal, oil, and conventional hydropower, the longevity of discussions about the two tidal power…
Stones at War
One year after the German surrender in World War II, an exhibition about the “Great Patriotic War” opened its doors in the regional museum of Chelyabinsk. The curators presented the visitors with a geological take on the war events: the exhibition employed a geological time frame, which started with the genesis of planet Earth, and displayed a large introductory section on natural resources of the southern Urals, the museum’s home region. The exh…
A Fluid Iron Curtain
The Pasvik River shapes the greater part of the border between Russia and Norway. This body of water was a site of Norwegian–Soviet energy cooperation from the 1950s until the late 1970s. Norwegian firms constructed four hydropower stations in a strategically sensitive area. Drawing on Soviet and Norwegian archival materials, this study analysed the heterogeneous interests and negotiation processes that resulted in long-term hydropower cooperatio…

Medienrezeption Als Erfahrung
Einflussfaktoren auf die Mediennutzung der Unterschichten im deutschen Kaiserreich (1871–1918)
The development of Germany's media system during the 19th century has been characterized as an "unleashing of mass communication" Explaining this increase in lower class media use solely by reference to economic factors would mean taking too narrow a view, though. This study therefore provides a systematic survey of the social and communication history literature regarding such dimensions of the lower classes' social situation and mentality presu…

Au…
