Association of Migration with Hospitalization and Mortality Among Medicare Beneficiaries with End-Stage Renal Disease in Puerto Rico After Hurricane Maria
Background: Hurricane Maria, which struck Puerto Rico (PR) on September 20, 2017, was one of the worst natural disasters in modern US history. Maria disproportionately impacted chronically ill patients, such as those with end-stage renal disease (ESRD), some of whom migrated to the US mainland to receive care. Objective: We aim to examine the association of migration with hospitalization and mortality among Medicare beneficiaries with ESRD. Metho…
Pay-for-Performance Incentives for Home Dialysis Use and Kidney Transplant
In this cross-sectional study, the first 2 years of the ETC model were not associated with increased use of home dialysis or kidney transplant, nor changes in racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic disparities in these outcomes
Changes in Migration and Mortality Among Patients With Kidney Failure in Puerto Rico After Hurricane Maria
The findings of this cross-sectional study suggest there was a significant increase in the number of people receiving dialysis outside of Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria. However, no significant differences in mortality rates before and after the hurricane were found, which may reflect disaster emergency preparedness among dialysis facilities and the population with kidney failure, as well as efforts from other stakeholders
Medicaid Expansion and Medicare-Financed Hospitalizations Among Adult Patients With Incident Kidney Failure
In this cross-sectional study with a difference-in-differences analysis, the ACA's Medicaid expansion was associated with decreases in Medicare-financed hospitalizations and hospital days and increases in dual Medicare and Medicaid coverage. These findings suggest favorable spillover outcomes of Medicaid expansion to Medicare-financed care, which is the primary payer for patients with kidney failure
The Effect of the Affordable Care Act Dependent Coverage Mandate on Health Insurance and Labor Supply
This article examines the effect of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) dependent coverage mandate on health insurance and labor supply. The author applies three research designs—difference-in-differences, regression discontinuity, and regression kink designs—and conducts extensive robustness checks and falsification tests, along with a formal test for the location of discontinuity and kink. The author finds no discernible evidence of the labor supply …

Depressive Symptoms in Koreans, Korean-Chinese and Chinese
We compared symptoms among three groups of depressed patients: 60 Koreans residing in Seoul, Korea; 42 Korean-Chinese in Yanbien, China; and 31 Chinese in Yanbien, China, using Hamilton's Rating Scale for Depression and Beck's Depression Inventory. Korean depressives manifested the highest scores in depressive mood, dissatisfaction, feelings of guilt, and loss of work and interest, whereas the Chinese scored highest in loss of work and interest, …
