Law incentives for juvenile recruiting by drug trafficking gangs
Modeling the U.S. Firearms Market
We estimate the first econometric model of the national civilian firearms market in the United States (1946–2016), where per capita firearms‐related harm is exceptionally high. Solving simultaneous equation models instrumented by natural disasters and steel prices, and employing unique firearms prices and quantities data, we find this market operates normally, except that firearms stocks may generate some new market demand in a positive feedback …
Measuring the negative externalities of a private leisure activity
Given the recent increase observed in crime related to football matches, we determine the extent to which this private leisure activity is responsible for negative crime externalities. We conduct an Exploratory Spatial Data Analysis and spatial regressions at the census tract level drawing on data for the matches played by Football Club Barcelona and geocoded crime data for the city of Barcelona (Spain); focusing on thefts (mainly pick pocketing)…
How do US state firearms laws affect firearms manufacturing location? An empirical investigation, 1986–2010
We exploit variations in US state firearms laws to study their relation to the spatial distribution of more than 2700 federally licensed manufacturers of firearms for the civilian and law enforcement markets across the country. Accounting for a variety of economic factors¿such as cost, tax burden and agglomeration effects¿we find that states with relatively permissive, end-user friendly laws host more firearms manufacturing establishments than do…
When police patrols matter. The effect of police proximity on citizens’ crime risk perception
Local Public Expenditures and Housing Prices
This paper estimates a hedonic price model which makes it possible to determine how the price of a unit varies with the set of attributes it possesses, in the Spanish housing market. Concretely, and by means of capitalisation, hedonic price models can be used as an instrument to capture how local public expenditures influence housing prices and, by extension, how homeowners can indirectly receive benefit from local public investment. Using indivi…
Does Social Capital Reduce Crime
We investigate the effects of civic norms and associational networks on crime rates. Civic norms may attach guilt and shame to criminal behavior, thus increasing its opportunity cost. Associational networks may increase returns to noncriminal activities and raise detection probabilities, but they may also work as communication channels for criminals and may offer official cover to criminal activities. The empirical assessment of these effects pos…
