Lost in Representation
This contribution explores LGBTQIA+ adolescents’ perceptions of the representations and self-representations of LGBTQIA+ subjectivities in digital media, with particular attention to the tensions between visibility, authenticity, and recognition. Drawing on 21 in-depth interviews with young people aged 16 to 18, the study investigates how online queer visibility is received, filtered, and sometimes rejected by LGBTQIA+ individuals. In this contex…
‘Maybe he will send the video on to someone, to some of his friends…’
This paper examines how Italian teenagers construct meanings, norms and boundaries around sexting within their everyday digital cultures. Drawing on six vignette-based focus groups with 49 participants aged 16-18 years, the study used a media practice approach to analyse how teenagers collectively interpret a hypothetical sexting vignette. Findings show that participants overwhelmingly rely on heteronormative scripts, reproducing the dominant "gi…
Between feminist visibility and anti-feminist backlash
Gender, Intimacy, and Digital Practices
The relationship between digital practices, gender, and intimacy in teenagers’ everyday life is gaining growing attention. We can look at digital media as environments that offer young people agency and spaces where they can construct and perform their identity (boyd 2014) through bricolage practices (Willett 2008) and by experimenting with their own selves, also with regard to gender and intimacy (Ferreira 2021; Metcalfe & Llewellyn 2020; Scarce…
Women's (and Men's) Voices Against VAW
This paper makes a contribution to the literature on corporate communication against VAW by analyzing an innovative case study. The case study is a two-season podcast produced by Sorgenia, an Italian electricity and gas company, for the 2021 and 2022 editions of its anti-VAW campaign "#sempre25novembre" ("Always 25 November"). The research is articulated into two stages: content analysis of the two podcast seasons, and semi-structured interviews …
Sexual assault or ‘just a bad date’? #MeToo and conceptualisations of sexual violence in the Twitter discussion of the allegations against Aziz Ansari
The article explores the tensions between ‘common-sense’ and ‘continuum’ conceptualisations of sexual violence in public discourse during the height of the #MeToo social media movement in 2017. A particularly salient case study for analysis is identified in the publication of sexual assault allegations against actors Aziz Ansari on the website Babe.net in January 2018. This story proved especially controversial and sparked a public debate on the …
Exploring the vaccine conversation on TikTok in Italy
TikTok, a social media platform for creating and sharing short videos, has seen a surge in popularity during the COVID-19 pandemic. To analyse the Italian vaccine conversation on TikTok, we downloaded a sample of videos with a high play count (Top Videos), identified through an unofficial Application Programming Interface (consistent with TikTok's Terms of Service), and collected public videos from vaccine sceptic users through snowball sampling …
Gender issues for Italian young people
The transformations of gender cultures are among the most powerful cultural and social processes of our age: at different speeds, these changes are affecting all societies in the world. Feminist thought and struggles, LGBTQ+ movements and new masculinities are eroding the pillars of patriarchy. Changes of this magnitude, destined to overturn centuries-old systems and power relations in public and private life, have been met with widespread resist…
Women’s statues in Italian cities. A study of public art and cultural policies
In recent decades, the styles and the role of monumentality have undergone significant transformations in the West, in line with wider trends of democratization and demystification of arts. Nevertheless, statues depicting human figures are still important landmarks in urban cultures. The statue wars that have erupted in several countries during recent years to challenge the racist, colonial and/or patriarchal vision embodied by many monuments, ar…
