Global Catholicism: Between Disruption and Encounter, written by Massimo Faggioli and Bryan Froehle
Images of the martyrs were produced in Macao and "shipped across the oceans" (379), Rome being among these destinations.Soon images of these martyrs were being produced in many places, including Mexico, Peru, Germany, and France.Preisinger shows clearly how making the 1597 martyrdoms known in Rome paid off fairly quickly regarding official Roman recognition: Pope Urban VIII beatified all twenty-six martyrs in 1627.Preisinger also makes clear that…

David G. Schultenover, S.J., Jesuit Superior General Luis Martín García and His Memorias: “Showing Up”
David Schultenover, S.J.’s monumental study of the Jesuit superior general Luis Martín (1846–1906) leaves all students of modern Jesuit, Catholic, and Spanish history in his debt. (For me this debt is personal. Some years ago, Schultenover generously provided me with a transcription of some of Martín’s memoirs for use in one of my own projects.) It is an unusual text derived from an unusual source. Schultenover combines a close reading and digest…
Forum on Jon Butler's God in Gotham: The Miracle of Religion in Modern Manhattan: Introductory Remarks
Jon Butler's God in Gotham: The Miracle of Religion in Modern Manhattan is not a book, Butler would be the first to tell us, that anyone should have expected to read (or write). The equation of Manhattan with modernity and modernity with secularization has long been hardwired into the scholarly and popular imagination. Butler wants to disrupt these circuits. It is not that Manhattan was not secular but rather that religion flourished there beyond…

Catholics, Democrats, and the GOP in Contemporary America
This essay places recent shifts in Catholic voting patterns and controversies over Catholic politicians and moral issues in historical perspective. Current attacks by some Catholic bishops on pro-choice Catholic Democrats (and now Republicans) rest upon a growing sectarianism within Catholicism and resistance to any moderation of the pro-choice position within the Democratic party
The Greening of America, Catholic Style, 1930-1950
This article examines the rise and fall of the "green revolution" philosophy developed by the National Catholic Rural Life Conference in the 1930s as a distinct strain of American environmentalism. After reviewing the evolution of the approach, its maturation around 1940, and its postwar marginalization, the article focuses on three aspects of the NCRLC. First is its ideology, as a "third way," a distributist alternative to socialism and capitali…

I One chapter of journalist Paul Blanshard's best-selling 1949 attack on Catholic influence in American culture, American Freedom and Catholic Power, included a discussion of what Blanshard termed "Science, Scholarship and Superstition." Concluding that the "most important and lucrative form of anti-science in the Church is the exploitation of miracles and relics," Blanshard expressed particular scorn for purported Marian apparitions, beginning w…

Racial Justice and the People of God: The Second Vatican Council, the Civil Rights Movement, and American Catholics
Catholic participation in the southern civil rights movement culminated at Selma in March 1965. As was customary in much of the South, Selma's Catholic churches were strictly segregated, with the priests in charge of the African American "mission" parish ignored by the city's other clergy. (One attempt at integration of the city's "white" parish by a group of African American Catholic teenagers met with fierce resistance.) In addition, the bishop…
Catholic State and Jesuit Society
The fractious condition of contemporary American Catholicism is perhaps a sign of health, not merely dissent, but this state of affairs certainly provides a vivid contrast to the more culturally cohesive Church (with the triumphant capital C) of the 1940s and 1950s. Even for thirty-something Catholics, the era of Latin Masses, endless novenas, bulging Catholic schools, packed convents, and large families is little more than a dim, if haunting, me…
