Violence Does Not Enhance Preference for Sex
A myth that violence can enhance subsequent sexual engorgement has been promoted by writers who accept hypotheses which by their own calculations are shown to be unreasonable, who design for yet do not publish initial or basal data or establish any legitimate reference level. Since preference is measured by a difference in behavior in two situations, it can be referred to either situation. Referred to the only situation which can be used by the r…
Repetition Effects Depend on Duration and Are Enhanced by Continuation of Interrupted Music
An experiment with 108 young adults showed that (a) repetition produced habituation or enhancement of liking, galvanic skin response (GSR) and respiration amplitude only if music selections continued longer than an initial five seconds and (b) when five seconds of either selection is, on the posttest, continued for 15 seconds, there is relatively more liking, more GSR, and less amplitude of respiration. These results are consistent with reports o…
GSR Conditioning
A recently popular behavior theory attempted to dissolve distinctions between classical and instrumental conditioning by assuming that reward or need reduction--or presentation of a stimulus associated therewith-is necessary for classical as well as instrumental conditioning (14). Conditioned reflex experiments are said to be consistent with the hypothesis of need reduction because of the duration of the shock usual in such experiments; the onset…
