  • Transformative Choices for Wise Spiritual Renewal in the Inner Chapters of the Zhuāngzǐ and the New Testament Gospels

    LAUREN F PFISTER•ARTICLE•Journal of World Christianity•2023

By highlighting two genres of literature found within the Inner Chapters of the Zhuāngzǐ and the Four Gospels of the New Testament, I compare creatively and meaningfully these two classical collections of texts from Daoist and Chrstian traditions in a manner never previously pursued. In those two genres are “instruction plura-logues” and “hard sayings”: the former involves a master/teacher interacting with at least two others (disciples, question…

  • A New Standard Reference Work on Bibles in China

    Open Access•Lauren Pfister, LAUREN F PFISTER•ARTICLE•The Journal of Ecclesiastical…•2023

As a relatively open academic atmosphere related to religious studies in general became manifest in the People's Republic of China in the early 1990s, new possibilities for studies of various forms of Christianity in greater China (the mainland and Chinese communities outside of the PRC) began to be realised both within China and overseas. Within the first decade of the twenty-first century, two major handbooks related to the study of Christianit…

    Open Access•Lauren Pfister, LAUREN F PFISTER•ARTICLE•Journal of Classical Sociology•2005•Cited by: 1•References: 5

Some of Weber's descriptions and evaluations of Protestant groups and their ethos are employed to reveal dimensions of Protestant missionary activities and their contributions in early 20th-century China and Europe. The main focus is on the German missionary Richard Wilhelm (1873-1930). Wilhelm distinguished himself while living in the German colony of Jiāozhōu as an educator and missionary-scholar, specializing in translating ancient Ruist ('Con…

  • A Modern Chinese Philosophy Built upon Critically Received Traditions

    Open Access•LAUREN F PFISTER•CHAPTER•New Confucianism•2003

In his recent book on "new traditionalism" (xin chuantongzhuyi 新傳統主義) Zheng Jiadong 鄭家棟 refers to Feng Youlan 馮友蘭 (1895–1990) as part of a broader movement to reinstate selective traditional concepts within the framework of a distinctively modern style of Chinese philosophizing. Much to his credit, Zheng handles the varying philosophical concerns of Feng's controversial career before and after the establishment of the People's Republic in China i…

  • The Mengzian Matrix for Accommodationist Missionary Apologetics

    LAUREN F PFISTER•ARTICLE•Monumenta Serica•2002

  • James Legge's metricalBook of Poetry

    Open Access•Lauren Pfister, LAUREN F PFISTER•ARTICLE•Bulletin of the School of…•1997•References: 2

Few non-Asian sinological scholars would not recognize the name of James Legge(A.D. 1815-97), partly because his voluminous translations of the Confucian canon still continue to be reprinted and used by Western sinological circles 120 years after their first publication. In China itself, Legge has recently received new attention with the republication of bilingual editions ofThe Four BooksandThe Book of Changes. Japanese readers have had rather m…
