    Corliss Outley•ARTICLE•Leisure Sciences•2026

This paper addresses the systematic exclusion of Anna Julia Cooper’s foundational Black feminist thought from the sociological and leisure studies canon. Despite her 1892 work, A Voice from the South, pioneering intersectional analysis and standpoint theory decades before these concepts entered mainstream academia, Cooper remains marginalized. The discipline’s canon was deliberately constructed around white, male, Eurocentric thinkers, creating a…

    Cameron J W Smith, Corliss Outley et al.•ARTICLE•Leisure Sciences•2026

This paper advances Afropessimism as a necessary philosophical and ontological framework for leisure and recreation studies, arguing that anti-Blackness is not a remediable flaw but a foundational condition of the social order that positions Blackness outside the category of the Human. Grounded in social death theory, it theorizes Blackness through natal alienation, gratuitous violence, and social dishonor, and contends that leisure spaces, often…

Alayna Schmidt, Corliss Outley et al.•ARTICLE•Leisure/Loisir•2023

Black feminist thought is produced by and for Black women, but could it be applied by – be the conceptual lens for – others? How do/should I position myself as a white woman doing Black feminist work? How do I de-centre myself, centre Black voices, and also use the power that my whiteness provides to do the type of social justice work Black feminist thought approaches demands? Here, I wrestle with the answers to these questions mainly through my …

The reality of oppression in the lives of Black girls shows the complex ways dehumanization becomes part of the Black girlhood experience. As we look into the role of leis…

Corliss Outley, Shamaya Bowen et al.•ARTICLE•Leisure Sciences•2021•Cited by: 9•References: 10

For centuries Africans were captured and brought to America in bondage and forced to forge a new culture. The development of a Black culture gave rise to humor as a coping mechanism against the oppressive state they found themselves in. For centuries, humor became a way to protest their conditions by creating various humorous styles that infused social political commentary on oppression as a sign of defiance, while also providing hope for the hop…
