The politics of research and linking it to educational policy/practice
Choices in conceptualizing classroom‐anchored research and linking it to policy/practice to improve educational quality in ‘developing’ countries

Educators as Workers and Political Actors in Britain and North America
It was only a matter of time, but it's about time. Critical perspectives on education have in the last 15 years or so focused on issues of curriculum (e.g. Young, 1971; Apple, 1979), educational policy (e.g. Salter & Tapper, 1981), social relations in schools and classrooms (e.g. Sharp & Green, 1975; Bowles & Gintis, 1976; Bourdieu & Passeron, 1977; Giroux, 1981), and student peer groups (e.g. Everhart, 1983; McLaren, 1986; Weis, 1985; Willis, 19…
Contradictions in the Role of Professor as Activist
Case studies of the author's involvement in political activities are presented. These are drawn upon to discuss issues raised by Foucault, Gramsci and others about the social roles of intellectuals. The professoriate is conceived to experience a contradiction, partly couched in terms of academic freedom as a “liberating right” versus an “immobilizing chain.” The author urges the professoriate to become activist in order to avoid their assimilatio…
Reproduction, Contradictions, and Conceptions of Curriculum in Preservice Teacher Education
Two years of ethnographic fieldwork in a teacher preparation program are drawn upon to explore the contradictions relevant to conceptions of curriculum which preservice teachers encounter. Their resolutions of the given-problematical, public-personal, and molecular-holistic dilemmas or contradictions are shown to inform our understanding of the correspondence and contradictions between teacher education, schooling, the state, and the economy. Imp…
