On the constituent elements of certain sixteenth-century Ottoman documents

On the recensions of Uruj's 'History of the Ottomans
The so-called 'Anonymous Chronicles' of the Ottoman dynasty and the closely related texts which pass under the name of Uruj present formidable problems to an editor, for they are not 'histories' in the classical sense, handed down in copies made for scholars by professional copyists, but rather storybooks of the genre of the Baṭṭāl-nāme and the Dānishmend-nāme, written for the edification and entertainment of the ordinary man, so that many a 'cop…
The Menāqib of Yakhshi Faqīh
In a passage found in all manuscripts of 'Āshiqpashazāde's History of the Ottomans, and hence in the two editions 'C' and 'G, the author relates that in 816/1413, when Meḥemmed I marched against his brother Mūsā, he himself-then a lad of about thirteen and evidently accompanying the army-fell ill and was left behind at Geyve (the township where the main road from Ankara to Constantinople crosses the Sakaria

A few weeks ago while looking through our library's set of Ibrahim Hakki Konyah's popular periodical Tarih Hazinesi, with its lavish photographs of important material, I chanced on the reproduction of a nishān of 815/1412, one of the illustrations accompanying an article on the Turkish State Archives (vol. i, no. 5, issue of 15 January 1951, p. 238

The commemoration volume published by the Turkish Historical Society for the tercentenary of the death of the Ottoman polymath Kātib Čelebi (1609-57) contains an exhaustive survey of his works by 0. Only comparatively recently was it recognized that the few MSS of portions of Kemālpaazāde's 'History of the Ottoman Dynasty' which exist in the libraries of Western Europe represent less than a half of the complete work and that there survives in Istanbul the great bulk of the ten books of which it originally consisted
