  • Running amok: Taming, wildness and captivity in legal struggles over elephants’ rights in Sri Lanka

    Open Access•M Benadusi•ARTICLE•Civilisations•2024•References: 38

This paper draws on ethnographic fieldwork in Sri Lanka, where I followed animal welfare advocates and legal experts involved in both formal and informal interventions concerning the treatment of captive elephants. It explores how moments of elephant resistance – such as breaking free from chains or running amok – are not only interpreted as expressions of nonhuman agency but are actively mobilised to challenge the legal and moral frameworks that…

    Open Access•M Benadusi•ARTICLE•Archivio antropologico mediterraneo•2022•Cited by: 2•References: 12

Dopo …

  • Blurred memories: War and disaster in a Buddhist Sinhala village

    Open Access•M Benadusi•ARTICLE•Focaal•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 14

This article analyzes the regimes of truth and efforts at falsification that emerged after the 2004 tsunami in Sri Lanka, where the experience of fear, the blurring of memory, and the fabrication of identity became normalized during the course of a long civil war. By shedding light on the memorialization processes in a Buddhist Sinhala village on the border of the northeastern Tamil zones, the article shows how the tsunami has reinforced governme…

  • Sicilian Futures in the Making

    M Benadusi•ARTICLE•Nature and Culture•2019

Discourses and practices of anticipation occupy a hypertrophic space in contexts where uncontrolled industrial growth has inflicted grave damage on peoples and territories, even triggering environmental disasters. This article explores the use of nonhuman species as anticipatory devices in a petrochemical terminal in Sicily, focusing on public representations of three species: scavenger bacteria that play a cleansing role and underline citizens’ …

  • Oil in Sicily: Petrocapitalist imaginaries in the shadow of old smokestacks

    Open Access•M Benadusi•ARTICLE•Economic Anthropology•2018•Cited by: 2•References: 23

By describing the long trajectory of petrochemical industrialization in a Mediterranean area in southeastern Sicily locally known as the triangle of death, this article discusses how the widespread, long-term, and nearly invisible nature of everyday forms of catastrophe generate effects that at times are even more insidious than a major disaster. Indeed, like the fumes rising from an industrial smokestack, oil culture seeps into the imaginaries a…

    Open Access•M Benadusi•ARTICLE•ANUAC•2017

Open Access•M Benadusi, Alessandro Lutri et al.•ARTICLE•ANUAC•2017•Cited by: 1
