  • Demographic change, secular stagnation, and inequality

Open Access•Arthur Jacobs, FREDDY HEYLEN•ARTICLE•Journal of Demographic Economics•2025

We study whether the increased adoption of available automation technologies allows economies to avoid the negative effect of aging on per capita output. We develop a quantitative theory in which firms choose to which extent they automate in response to a declining workforce and rising old-age dependency. An important element in our model is the integration of two capital types: automation capital that acts as a substitute to human labor, and tra…

  • Macroeconomic and distributional effects of demographic change in an open economy—the case of Belgium

Open Access•Willem Devriendt, FREDDY HEYLEN•ARTICLE•Journal of Demographic Economics•2020

We construct and parameterize an overlapping generations model for an open economy with individuals who differ in innate ability. Key endogenous variables are hours worked, investment in human and physical capital, and per capita growth. The model replicates important data in Belgium since 1960 remarkably well. Simulating it, we observe that behavioral adjustments by households and firms contribute to reverse the negative arithmetical effect of f…

Isebaert D., Heylen F. and Smolders C. Houses and/or jobs: ownership and the labour market in Belgian districts, Regional Studies. A. J. Oswald argues that high rates of homeownership may imply inferior labour market outcomes. Using a panel of forty-two Belgian districts since the 1970s and accounting for other key determinants of employment, this paper confirms the Oswald hypothesis. A 1 percentage point rise in the rate of ownership in a distri…

  • National Labour Market Institutions and the European Economic and Monetary Integration Process

Open Access•FREDDY HEYLEN, André Van Poeck•ARTICLE•JCMS Journal of Common Market…•1995•Cited by: 2•References: 16

This article investigates the role of national labour market institutions for the chances of successful transition to Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) in Europe, as well as for its viability. The conclusions are rather pessimistic. Although overlooked by the Maastricht Treaty, the need for real convergence (convergence of unemployment rates) is emphasized as a major condition for success. However, current labour market institutions in the EU mak…
