  • Fungi in popular culture reconsidered

    Open Access•Karel Šima, Miroslav Michela•ARTICLE•European Journal of Cultural…•2025•References: 3

This article challenges the enduring binary of mycophilia and mycophobia, introduced by R. Gordon Wasson in 1957, which has long framed cultural perceptions of fungi. While the dichotomy distinguishes between cultures that embrace fungi as edible and culturally meaningful, and those that regard them with suspicion or fear, it remains rooted in anthropocentric assumptions. I argue that the conceptual opposition between mycophilia and mycophobia re…

Open Access•E Wight Bakke, Elisabeth Bakke et al.•ARTICLE•Nations and Nationalism•2022•References: 23

Twelve historians and social scientists reflect on Miroslav Hroch's contributions to the field of nationalism studies. There are essays on his pioneering comparative historical studies of ‘small nation’ national movements and his distinction between nationalism and national movements. Other essays focus on concepts such as those of protagonist, the three phases of national movements, the small nation and nationally relevant conflict of interest. …

  • Self-publishing and Building Glocal Scenes

    Open Access•Miroslav Michela, Karel Šima•ARTICLE•Forum Historiae•2021

I n our special issue we would like to open the debate about the different contexts where we can find self-publishing and alternative publication strategies intended to build or maintain various scenes in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE). Compared to the previous issue of Forum Historiae, which was dedicated to subcultural zines, we opened the discussion for a wider spectrum of independent publishing which played a specific role in socialist and …

  • The political economy of fanzines on the threshold of state socialism and post-socialism

    Open Access•Karel Šima, Miroslav Michela•ARTICLE•European Journal of Cultural…•2021•Cited by: 4•References: 4

In this article, I analyse Czech and Slovak fanzine-making during the transition from state socialism to post-socialism. The regime change ushered in new dominant forms of cultural production, and thus a situation emerged in which cultural hierarchies were being negotiated and new ways of collective action being formed. Fanzines played a crucial role in building up alternative communities in the new neoliberal system, when there was strong demand…

ubcultural studies have widely benefited from the study of zines, but nonethe- less zines are not an entirely common subject matter among scholars. Although our colleagues from the Archiv der Jugendkulturen have assembled a rather extensive bibliography about zines, 1 these publications remain a marginal, not well-established focus of study. Zine research, however, has made a distinctive mark on one field, the study of feminist activism, as indep…

  • Encyclopedia of Romantic Nationalism in Europe

Joep Leerssen, Inge Adriansen et al.•BOOK•Encyclopedia of Romantic…•2018

This encyclopedia documents the presence and impact of nationalized cultural consciousness in European nationalism. It tracks how intellectuals, historians, philologists, novelists, poets, painters, folklorists, and composers, in an intensely collaborative transnational network, articulated the national identities and aspirations that would go on to determine European history and politics, with effects that are still felt today. Edited by Joep Le…

  • Evidence in Czech research evaluation policy

    Karel Šima, Miroslav Michela•ARTICLE•Evidence & Policy•2015

The Czech research evaluation policy was rooted in an instrumental paradigm of policy process and evidence embodied in metrics-based cost-benefit logic. But this framework disintegrated when confronted with actual institutional interests. Based on the ethnography of university departments, this study shows how academics challenged the notion of evidence for evaluation. It is argued that research policy should be studied as an arena of conflicting…
