Social Capital and Self-Perceived Health in Lone Mothers
This study aimed to explore the distribution of social capital and its relation to self-perceived health in lone mothers across Europe. Data were drawn from the European Social Survey Round 5. The sample was restricted to women (15–64 years), not cohabiting with a partner, and with children (≤ 18 years) living in the household. Social capital was measured using variables, representing both structural (political engagement, social support, and soc…
Inequalities in health and health behaviours between couple and lone mothers before and during the financial crisis in Spain (2003–2012)
Lone mothers report worse health and adopt more risky health behaviours than couple mothers, as largely documented in several European countries, but not deeply in Spain. The primary aim of this study was to identify the possible existence of inequalities in health and health behaviours between couple and lone mothers in Spain by occupational social class and employment status. A second aim was to explore whether any inequalities were influenced …
Processes and contexts influencing health inequalities among women who are mothers
This paper presents a conceptual framework that aims to conceptualise the different processes and contexts influencing health inequalities among women who are mothers. On the one hand, four processes are shown: (1) social stratification; (2) route into motherhood; (3) exposure and vulnerability to risk factors; and (4) generation of health inequalities. On the other hand, the role of the socioeconomic and political context, the labour market cont…
Gender Policies and Gender Inequalities in Health in Europe
The aim of this article is to explain the results of the SOPHIE project regarding the effect of gender policies on gender inequalities in health in Europe. We start with the results of a systematic review on how gender regimes and gender equality policies at the country level impact women’s health and gender inequalities in health. Then, we report on three empirical analyses on the relationship between different family policy models existing in E…
Knowledge and attitudes of Spanish adolescent girls towards human papillomavirus infection
Knowledge about HPV infection and vaccine was fair in adolescents of Valencia, and is independent to the number of contacts with the health system, it is however correlated to the conversations about the vaccine with their peers and the vaccination status. An action to improve HPV knowledge through health providers might increase vaccine coverage in the adolescents
White and Mexican Heritage Elders' Crime Victimization Perspectives
Prior research on the fear of crime among the elderly has shown that elders are more afraid of being a victim of crime than are younger persons and that such fears may vary depending upon where people reside. This study compares the level of fear of criminal victimization of elders living in three adjacent southwestern communities. White elders live in an age-restricted community within two of the studied communities. The third community is not a…
A comparison of White and Mexican Heritage Older Adults’ Leisure Choices and Constraints in Two Adjacent Communities
This study compares the leisure patterns and constraints to leisure participation of two groups of older adults, one white (Non Hispanic) and one Hispanic (Mexican heritage) living in two adjacent communities. One community was developed specifically to attract retirees and is composed primarily of individuals who are white. The other community has until recent years, served as the home for individuals arriving from Mexico to work on neighboring …
Child Sexual Abuse and the Mexican American Family
Current models that look at prevention, treatment and policies for Mexican American children who are victims of child sexual abuse, often ignore the ethnicity of the victim. This paper presents a model for looking at the context in which the trauma occurs. The model takes into account the child's ethnicity, the family, the culture and the larger majority culture in which that child has to survive. It explores risks to victimization as well as cul…
