  • Can decentralization explain China’s growth in reform era

Fan Fan, Yunhai Hu et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Asian Public Policy•2026

China’s reform-era economic miracle has sparked intense debate over the role of (de)centralization in its rise. This study complements existing theories that attribute the remarkable growth to fiscal decentralization, career tournaments, or adaptive governance, arguing these frameworks misinterpret causality by overlooking more fundamental drivers. We propose an alternative model centred on the post-mid-1990s export boom in consumer goods manufac…

  • Job demands, negative affect, and incivility toward customers

Open Access•Miaoying Fang, Fan Fan•ARTICLE•Social Behavior and Personality…•2025

This study explored how job demands can affect incivility toward customers, building upon conservation of resources theory. We collected survey data from 345 elder care workers at retirement communities in China. The results showed that job demands were positively related to incivility toward customers. Additionally, negative affect mediated this relationship, and self-compassion moderated the link between job demands and negative affect. On the …

  • Bridges or Barriers? A Systematic Literature Review of Multilingualism in Counseling

Open Access•Fan Fan, Elizabeth A Prosek et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal for the…•2025

Although the majority of the world’s population is multilingual, language issues in counseling remain under researched. To understand multilingualism issues in counseling, we conducted a systematic review of the literature published from 2013 to 2023. We aimed to understand how multiple languages are used during counseling sessions and what benefits or challenges may exist for the clients and counselors. To meet the end, we used the preferred rep…

  • Theorising Belle Époque Rio de Janeiro through Opium

    Fan, Fan Fan•ARTICLE•Journal of Latin American…•2023•References: 14

In 1905, Brazilian writer João do Rio published the crônica “Visões d’ópio” (Visions of opium), an account of his forays into the Chinese opium dens of Rio de Janeiro. While opium is often emblematic of both Parisian cosmopolitanism and exotic Orientalism in fin-de-siècle literature, I argue that the drug is less a replication of these coordinates in Brazil than a method of geopolitical thinking. Drawing from opium’s extractive history in China a…

  • Transfer-based decentralisation, economic growth and spatial inequality

    Open Access•Fan Fan, Ming Li et al.•ARTICLE•Urban Studies•2020•Cited by: 5•References: 22

China has adopted a transfer-based fiscal decentralisation scheme since the mid-1990s. In the 1994 tax sharing reform, the central government significantly raised its share of government revenue vis-à-vis local governments by taking most of the newly created value-added tax on manufacturing. One aim for the adoption of the transfer-based fiscal scheme was to channel more funds to less developed regions and rural areas, and to alleviate growing in…

  • Mitochondrial Genome of an 8,400-Year-Old Individual from Northern China Reveals a Novel Subclade under C5d

Xiyan Wu, Wu Wu et al.•ARTICLE•Human Biology•2019•References: 4

Ancient DNA studies have always refreshed our understanding of the human past that cannot be tracked by modern DNA alone. Until recently, ancient mitochondrial genomic studies in East Asia were still very limited. Here, we retrieved the whole mitochondrial genome of an 8,400-year-old individual from Inner Mongolia, China. Phylogenetic analyses show that the individual belongs to a previously undescribed clade under haplogroup C5d that most probab…
