Vocabulary structure in foreign language learners
This empirical study explores the vocabulary structure of heritage minority learners of English as a foreign language (EFL) within a Spanish mainstream educational context. Using graph analysis and complex network theory, the study examines lexical organization among learners of local origin (Spanish monolinguals) and heritage multilingual learners from Arabic, Romanian, and Urdu backgrounds. Results reveal no significant quantitative differences…
Semantic Categorization in L1 and L2
Aims and Objectives: The objective of this paper is to explore how learners organize and access their mental lexicon in the L1 and L2 and to look for similarities and differences in these processes. We wanted to explore the impact of L1 linguistic and cultural background on semantic categorization. Methodology: The method used includes data gathering, graph analyses and computing. Specifically, graphs were calculated from experimental data and, t…
Navigating the Mental Lexicon
This paper examines the implications of the association patterns in our understanding of the mental lexicon. By applying the principles of graph theory to word association data, we intend to explore which measures tap better into lexical knowledge. To that end, we had different groups of English as Foreign language learners complete a lexical fluency task. Based on these empirical data, a study was undertaken on the corresponding lexical availabi…
The impact of bilingualism on the acquisition of an additional language
Aims: The aim of the present paper is to look into the impact of bilingualism on lexical knowledge, lexical fluency, and lexical cross-linguistic influence (CLI). Design and methodology: To that end, Spanish monolingual (86) and Spanish–Basque bilingual (87) EFL learners were tested on lexical knowledge, lexical fluency, and (lexical) CLI by means of a task of lexical availability. Data were extracted from written sources. Data and analysis: Nume…
The effects of the CLIL approach in young foreign language learners’ lexical profiles
The present paper presents a comparative study of the lexical profiles of young content and language integrated learning (CLIL) and traditional English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners’ written production. The different nature and amount of foreign language input received in these classes may have consequences in learners’ lexical profiles in writing. We scrutinized the writings of 72 CLIL learners and 68 traditional EFL learners for frequenc…
CLIL or time? Lexical profiles of CLIL and non-CLIL EFL learners
Vocabulary growth in young CLIL and traditional EFL learners
This paper presents a three‐year longitudinal study in which the receptive vocabulary size and lexical growth of a group of CLIL learners and of traditional EFL learners are compared. CLIL approaches are considered especially beneficial in lexical development. We tested the receptive vocabulary size of 58 learners in a CLIL programme and of 49 traditional EFL learners. The 2k VLT was used. Results revealed that learners' receptive vocabulary size…
