When the check shapes the stars
Online reviews shape restaurant reputation, yet how price perceptions influence ratings remains unclear. This study addresses this gap by integrating prospect theory with real-world pricing data from reviews of 2,000 New York restaurants. We operationalize reference dependence using consumer-reported prices versus platform-listed reference prices. Results reveal asymmetric effects: paying above the reference price reduces ratings more than equiva…
When Taylor Swift hits town
This article examines the economic returns on the hotel industry generated by music concerts featuring megastars, focusing on Taylor Swift. Drawing upon microeconomic theory, we posit that such impact varies across hotel categories depending on their natural occupancy rates and demand elasticity. We exploit the staggered rollout of Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour 2023 across U.S. cities to analyze their impact on hotel key performance indicators. Employ…
The impact of hotel openings on the commercial structure
Hotels and tourist-oriented businesses geographically coagglomerate in urban areas, suggesting that hotels affect the commercial structure around them. Yet, previous evidence is correlational and cannot establish if hotel openings can trigger a tourist-oriented commercial transformation. This paper proposes to fill this gap by using a natural experiment. At the end of 2015, the issuance of licenses for new hotels was suspended in Barcelona, heter…
Does an industry-promoted tourist tax per night affect hotel performance? Quasi-experimental evidence from Manchester
The Lasting Effects of Terrorism on Hotel Performance
Despite extant research on how terrorism impacts tourism demand, we still know little about its long-lasting effects and how long it takes for the hospitality industry to bounce back. Moreover, while terrorism deters demand, the effect on prices and revenues is still poorly understood. Rooted on microeconomic and Prospect Theory, this work investigates the causal effects of Jihadist attacks in Europe on five measures of hotel performance: rooms s…

Vacation rental management firms
In-person interactions between a vacation rental management firm and its customers mainly happen during check-ins, converting this process in a decisive touchpoint. Nevertheless, there is scant evidence on which are the best check-in practices that vacation rental management companies can apply. Accordingly, this study examines the relationship between three check-in practices and the online rating these companies obtain on their properties. To t…
Do ambient scents in hotel guest rooms affect customers’ emotions
The introduction of ambient scents in different business facilities might be an effective strategy to influence customers’ emotions and, ultimately, their experience. Yet, there is scant evidence on the effects of introducing ambient scents in hotels and, particularly, in hotels’ private areas such as the guest rooms. Accordingly, this study aims to analyse the impact on customers’ positive emotions when a pleasant ambient scent is introduced in …
Which commercial sectors coagglomerate with the accommodation industry? Evidence from Barcelona
The expansion of accommodation establishments in an urban area might bring about a transformation to its commercial structure to meet tourists' needs. This can result in the loss of the area's identity, jeopardize its authenticity, and worsen the residents' quality of life. Yet, beyond some anecdotes which currently dominate the policy debate, no empirical evidence exists identifying which specific businesses abound around accommodation establish…
