  • New research on the Gravettian site cluster of Grub-Kranawetberg, Austria

    Open Access•Philip R Nigst, Walpurga Antl-Weiser et al.•ARTICLE•Přehled výzkumů•2026

The Grub-Kranawetberg site cluster is embedded in the rich Upper Palaeolithic landscape of the Middle Danube region. Here we present an updated list of the sites around the villages of Grub and Stillfried, summarise the setting of the Grub-Kranawetberg site cluster in the landscape and provide a detailed overview of the research history for the sites of Grub-Kranawetberg including an updated overview of the different excavation areas. This is fol…

  • A First Look at the Gravettian Open-Air Site Ollersdorf-Heidenberg (Austria)

Open Access•Marjolein D Bosch, Stephane Pirson et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Paleolithic Archaeology•2025

The Middle Danube region is a key area for understanding Upper Palaeolithic hunter-gatherer behaviours in a climatic context due to its long loess–palaeosol sequences and rich archaeological record spanning from the onset of the Upper Palaeolithic to the Last Glacial Maximum and beyond. Recently, new approaches focusing on high-resolution studies of the stratigraphy, geoarchaeological studies at microscopic scale and investigations of organic mat…

  • Exploring the Surrounding of a Gravettian Site. The Case Study Grub-Kranawetberg, Austria

    Open Access•Philip R Nigst, Walpurga Antl-Weiser et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeologia Austriaca•2024

In this report we summarize the findings of our fieldwalking survey conducted around the well-known Mid-Upper Palaeolithic (Gravettian) open-air site Grub-Kranawetberg I in Lower Austria, about 40 kilometres northeast of Vienna. In September 2021, we surveyed around 126,000 square metres using GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) to piece-plot each find. In total, we recovered 359 finds comprising lithic artefacts and faunal remains. In our …

  • Analyzing Trends in Material Culture Evolution—a Case Study of Gravettian Points from Lower Austria and Moravia

    Open Access•Andreas Maier, R A JOHN et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Paleolithic Archaeology•2023•Cited by: 2•References: 25

Identifying, analyzing, and explaining trends in the development of material culture is one of the major concerns in prehistoric archaeology. The traditional recording of data in typologies, however, is not optimal for answering the question of diachronic change because typological data capture variability poorly and are often incompatible with multivariate statistics. To overcome these problems, we present PyREnArA (Python-R-Environment for Arti…

  • New Radiocarbon Dates for the Late Gravettian in Eastern Central Europe

Open Access•J Wilczyński, Tomasz Goslar et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2020•Cited by: 24•References: 28

The Middle Upper Palaeolithic (MUP) in eastern Central Europe (ECE) comprises three variants of Gravettian culture: Early Gravettian, Pavlovian, and Late Gravettian. While Early Gravettian and Pavlovian are merely located in Lower Austria and Moravia, the Late Gravettian occupations occurred over the entire territory of ECE. Compared to the number of sites the radiocarbon dating and the absolute chronology of the Late Gravettian is rather poor. T…
