  • Metro-rhythmic historical geography of folk music in Central Europe: The frontier of domination of triple and duple metre

    Open Access•Rafał Miśta•ARTICLE•Journal of Cultural Geography•2026

The article discusses the problem of metro-rhythmic diversity in Europe – particularly in Central Europe – in terms of metre type. Using a spatial index of tunes from Oskar Kolberg’s nineteenth-century folk music collection (covering mainly the lands of the former Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, but also other Slavic countries), all melodies were mapped with their assigned locations and metres. This approach made it possible to trace rhythmic div…

  • Historical Europe in the Asian “mirror”: Challenges and prospects of comparing the Patriarchy Index across space and time

Open Access•Mikołaj Szołtysek, Bartosz Ogórek et al.•ARTICLE•Cliometrica•2026

Scholars have long argued that the familial, demographic, and sociocultural conditions in historical Europe left little room for patriarchal bias compared to Asia. However, these claims have not been rigorously tested through large-scale, data-driven, comparative analyses and statistical modeling. This paper fills this gap by applying Gruber and Szołtysek (Hist Fam 2016. https://doi.org/10.1080/1081602X.2014.1001769 ) Patriarchy Index to IPUMS-in…

  • Representativeness and cultural variation of ethnic groups from the former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in Murdock’s Ethnographic Atlas

    Open Access•Rafał Miśta•ARTICLE•LUD Organ Polskiego Towarzystwa…•2022•References: 6

George Murdock's Ethnographic Atlas is one of the largest and most popular ethnographic databases in the world. It takes the form of a table containing systematically coded cultural characteristics for nearly 1,300 societies from around the world, and its structured form is particularly suited to cross-cultural quantitative research. One issue often raised in the context of using the Ethnographic Atlas is the underrepresentation of European ethni…

  • Tańce i melodie flisackie w zbiorach Oskara Kolberga

  • Uczestnictwo i mobilizacja w wyborach parlamentarnych 2019 roku

Open Access•Mikołaj Cześnik, Rafał Miśta et al.•ARTICLE•Studia Socjologiczne•2020

Celem artykułu jest wyjaśnienie mobilizacji wyborczej i zwiększonego uczestnictwa w wyborach parlamentarnych, przeprowadzonych w Polsce jesienią 2019 roku. Frekwencja wyborcza po raz pierwszy w historii postkomunistycznej Polski przekroczyła w nich 60%. Pytania badawcze i hipotezy dotyczą wzrostu frekwencji, (rosnącej) stabilności wyborczej i/lub rosnącej mobilizacji, a także mechanizmów (poziomu makro i mikro) wyjaśniających obserwowane zjawisko…

  • The Relationship between the Accuracy of Cultural Transmission and the Strength of Cultural Attractors

    Open Access•Rafał Miśta•ARTICLE•Social Evolution & History•2018•References: 3

On the basis of Dan Sperber's model of cultural attraction To this end, a simulation model is used, in which cultural representations are transmitted in a continuous space of possibilities. The conclusion is that the role of cultural attractors is enhanced (more cultural representations are going to be concentrated in the vicinity of attractors) when the cultural transmission is relatively faithful. Thereby, weak forces of attraction can be subst…
