  • Denis Murphy, the University of Queensland and Labour History, 1966-83: A Reassessment

Open Access•Bradley Bowden, Bradley Bowden Bradley Bowden•ARTICLE•Labour History•2016

This paper explores the flowering of labour history at the University of Queensland between\n1966 and 1983; a blossoming that not only laid foundations for the discipline in Queensland\nbut which also provided an interpretation at odds with the then dominant “Old Left”\nhistoriography. It is argued that, in addition to Denis Murphy’s efforts, there were four\ncomplex and unstable factors behind this flowering: initial support from Queensland Labo…

  • Perverse Transformation: Railway Development and the Shaping of Queensland Society, 1880-1901

Open Access•Bradley Bowden, Bradley Bowden Bradley Bowden•ARTICLE•Labour History•2015•Cited by: 1

The railways played a central role in the development of New World societies. In the United States, Shelton Stromquist found that in the American Mid-West and West, two sorts of communities were formed. The first were “merchant towns” under the domination of commercial interests and hostile to organised labour. The other were “railway towns.” These towns, within which railway workers were numerically significant, were supportive of labour militan…

  • Modern Labor in Queensland: Its Rise and Failings, 1978-98

    Open Access•Bradley Bowden, Bradley Bowden Bradley Bowden•ARTICLE•Labour History•2013•References: 1

This article explores the emergence of "modern Labor" in Queensland. Previously under Trades Hall control, Queensland Labor was transformed in 1980 when the Reform Group gained control after intervention by Labor's Federal Executive. Between 1989 and 2012 it was only out of office once (1996-98). Labor's restructure, however, brought neither rank-and-file involvement nor a substantial membership. Authority was vested in factional powerbrokers. Wh…

  • From Defeat to Catastrophe: The Labor Party in Rural New South Wales, 1988-2011

Open Access•Bradley Bowden, Bradley Bowden Bradley Bowden•ARTICLE•Labour History•2012

While Labor’s defeat in the 2011 New South Wales (NSW) election has received much comment an overlooked outcome is the ‘ghettoisation’ of its vote. Labor did not capture a single rural booth outside of the seat of Monaro. This article argues that this outcome stemmed not from recent organisational and policy failings but rather from trends now decades old. After 1988 few country people voted Labor. For almost 20 years, however, Labor’s plight was…

  • The Rise and Decline of Australian Unionism: A History of Industrial Labour from the 1820s to 2010

    Open Access•Bradley Bowden, Bradley Bowden Bradley Bowden•ARTICLE•Labour History•2011•Cited by: 5•References: 10

In exploring the factors that contributed to the rise and decline of industrial labour in Australia, this article argues that support for unionism initially emerged from a working class that was a product of the country's unusual economic history. In the twentieth century the implementation of systems of compulsory arbitration, devised to mediate industrial conflict, reinforced support for unionism. In 1948, however, support for unionism peaked a…
