Regional pragmatic variation in the use of conventional expressions at three Spanish-speaking sites
The longitudinal development of language attitudes towards Spanish and Catalan during the transition from primary to secondary school
This study investigates the longitudinal development of language attitudes towards Catalan and Spanish over a five-year period in the transition from primary to secondary education of a sample of students (N = 1,143) in Catalonia and Aragon. Two research questions were investigated: (1) How do language attitudes develop over time? and (2) How do individual and environmental variables contribute to the longitudinal development of language attitude…
Tense-aspect SLA research and Spanish Language Teaching
This study investigates the relationship between research findings and teaching practice by examining the declared practices and pedagogical content knowledge of teachers in Spanish language teaching (SLT) when teaching the meanings and forms of past tense. Data from an online questionnaire was used to investigate in which order teachers taught three Spanish past forms (preterite, imperfect, and present perfect), their justification for teaching …
The relation of second language acquisition, instructed second language acquisition, and language teaching from the lens of second language tense-aspect
This article examines the relationships between second language acquisition (SLA), instructed second language acquisition (ISLA), and language teaching by examining them from the lens of the research on the acquisition and teaching of second language (L2) tense-aspect in the last 20 years (2000–2021). Review 1 examines 56 instructional effect studies on the acquisition of L2 tense-aspect, and Review 2 examines 38 pedagogical proposals for the tea…
An SLA-Informed and Cognitive Linguistic Approach to the Teaching of L2 Catalan Tense-Aspect
This article explores the relationship between second language acquisition and language teaching presenting the design of a teaching sequence on past tenses that integrates the results of research on tense and aspect in a second language (the Aspect and Discourse Hypotheses and Input processing instruction). By implementing the principles of cognitive linguistics, the article presents the design of activities to teach the meanings of perfective, …
What does language revitalisation in the twenty-first century look like? New trends and frameworks
In this introduction, we offer an overview of language revitalisation (LR) as a transdisciplinary field and its connections to related disciplines. We outline its evolution from its origins, current directions, and possible future moves. In the last section, we introduce each of the articles in the special issue as they relate to three current developments in the field of LR: the role of the researcher in LR, the causes of language endangerment, …
The Aspect Hypothesis and the Acquisition of L2 Past Morphology in the Last 20 Years
Twenty years ago, a state-of-the-art review in SSLA marked the coming of age of the study of temporality in second language acquisition. This was followed by three monographs on tense and aspect the next year. This article presents a state-of-the-scholarship review of the last 20 years of research addressing the aspect hypothesis (AH) (Andersen, 1991, 2002; Andersen & Shirai, 1994, 1996), the most tested hypothesis in L2 temporality research. The…
Changes in language use with peers during adolescence
This article presents a longitudinal panel study analyzing the evolution of a sample of more than 1000 informants in the language practices with peers during the period between the end of primary education and the end of secondary education in Catalonia. Results led to the identification of five clusters of informants according to their linguistic trajectories. Three of them, which together accounted for 75% of all informants, combined the strong…
