Racial equity, reflection, and organizational change in museums
When are equity conversations more than “just talk?” This article draws on qualitative data from two interconnected NSF‐funded studies about racial equity in museums to explore the relationship between organizational reflection and organizational change. In one study, researchers interviewed staff from 29 museums that hosted the traveling exhibition RACE: Are We So Different? In the other, staff from of the Science Museum of Minnesota (SMM) used …
Community‐informed design: Blending community engagement and museum design approaches for sustainable experience development
The museum field currently and historically has centered on the needs of White, educated, privileged, and affluent people, and changing that reality requires new ways of conceptualizing, organizing, and assessing our core practices. Practice‐based models—including specific stories of how museums and communities work together—are still needed in our field, both as guidance for structuring future projects and as inspiration for what is possible. While museums have long played a role in science education, learning in this and other informal settings has not been studied nor understood as deeply as in formal settings (i.e., schools and classrooms). This position paper, written by learning researchers in a science museum engaged in equity and access work, notes that …
Using a Complex Adaptive Systems Perspective to Illuminate the Concept of Evaluation Capacity Building in a Network
While evaluation capacity building (ECB) may hold promise for fostering evaluation, little is known about how it is operationalized within a network. This article presents initial findings from a National Science Foundation–funded research project (Complex Adaptive Systems as a Model for Network Evaluations) that used concepts from complex adaptive systems theory to develop case studies of ECB within the Nanoscale Informal Science Education Netwo…
