Xenophon's Democratic Pedagogy
This article argues that, for Xenophon, hierarchies of power characteristic of non-democratic constitutions are incompatible with philosophical education. Hierarchized governments cannot teach their citizens effectively and are thus destabilized. Democracy emerges as the only viable constitution for Xenophon because its non-hierarchical parrhesiac society allows effective education, exemplified by the Socratics
