  • Beyond the curtain: The impact of political non alignment on the urban reconstruction of Skopje

    Elena Andonova, María Cristina García-González•ARTICLE•Planning Perspectives•2025•References: 36

This paper explores the reconstruction of Skopje following the 1963 earthquake, focusing on the interplay between productive conditions and temporal factors that shaped the city's transformation. The research examines how the earthquake, a critical juncture in Skopje's history, catalyzed profound urban and institutional changes, influenced by the Cold War's geopolitical landscape. The idea of ‘nonaligned modernism’ facilitated a convergence of in…

  • Covid-19 first lockdown as a window into language acquisition: Associations between caregiver-child activities and vocabulary gains

Natalia Kartushina, Nikolaus Mani et al.•PREPRINT•2021

The COVID-19 pandemic, and the resulting closure of daycare centers worldwide, led to unprecedented changes in children’s learning environments. This period of increased time at home with caregivers, with limited access to external sources (e.g., daycares) provides a unique opportunity to examine the associations between the caregiver-child activities and children’s language development. The vocabularies of 1742 children aged 8-36 months across 1…

Open Access•Thora Tenbrink, Elena Andonova et al.•ARTICLE•Language and Speech•2017•References: 30

This paper addresses the impact of dialogue strategies and functional features of spatial arrangements on communicative success. To examine the sharing of cognition between two minds in order to achieve a joint goal, we collected a corpus of 24 extended German-language dialogues in a referential communication task that involved furnishing a dolls’ house. Results show how successful communication, as evidenced by correct placement of furniture ite…

  • Parental report evidence for toddlers’ grammar and vocabulary in Bulgarian

    Open Access•Elena Andonova•ARTICLE•First Language•2015

This is the first study of a large sample of Bulgarian-speaking toddlers and their communicative development. A Bulgarian adaptation of the MacArthur–Bates Communicative Development Inventory Words and Sentences was used to obtain parent report data on 153 children between the ages of 20 and 30 months. Lexical and grammatical development were examined as a function of age, gender, and maternal education. While evidence was found for both lexical …

  • Co-ordination of spatial perspectives in response to addressee feedback: Effects of perceived addressee understanding

    Kavita Elisheba Thomas, Elena Andonova•ARTICLE•Pragmatics & Cognition•2012

In this paper we investigate the effect of level of understanding revealed by feedback in the form of clarification requests from a route follower on a route giver’s spatial perspective choice in their response in route instruction dialogues. In an experiment varying the level of understanding displayed by route follower clarification requests (the independent variable), route giver perspective switching in response to this feedback is investigat…

  • Spatial Strategies in the Description of Complex Configurations

    Thora Tenbrink, Kenny R Coventry et al.•ARTICLE•Discourse Processes•2011•Cited by: 2•References: 40

How people describe complex arrangements of objects in a small-scale setting has not been sufficiently investigated to predict when discourse strategies shift versus remain stable. In a study involving 100 native German participants, we investigated speakers' choices of perspective, as well as location and orientation information, when describing arrangements of doll's furniture. Results point to a dominant preference for relative reference frame…
