  • Solidarity, Social Responsibility and Sovereignty

    Open Access•Roch Dunin-Wąsowicz, Karolina Czerska-Shaw•ARTICLE•Europe Asia Studies•2026

This study examines how entrepreneurs and businesses, operating in a civic ecosystem between Poland and Ukraine following the 2022 full-scale invasion by Russia, have been mobilised by solidarity, commitment to social responsibility, and support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and European integration. It reveals that entrepreneurs largely perceive Ukraine’s trajectory as an irreversible shift towards being a liberal democratic state with a free market…

  • The Brexit trajectory

Open Access•Roch Dunin-Wąsowicz, Max Josef Migden et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Political Science•2026

This paper explores the lessons of Brexit for understanding the conditions under which a potential Polish exit from the European Union – commonly referred to as “Polexit” – could occur. We argue that the rise of populist Euroscepticism in the United Kingdom, highlights how political elites mobilised nativist and anti-elitist sentiments to build support for Brexit. The paper develops an original analytical framework to assess the feasibility of an…

  • Mixed Marriages in the Polish Catholic Migrant Community

Open Access•Roch Dunin-Wąsowicz, Stanislaw Fel et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Family Issues•2026

This paper examines the prevalence and characteristics of religiously mixed marriages among Polish migrants in England and Wales, focusing on unions between Catholics and partners from other religious backgrounds. Despite strong cultural and religious ties, Polish Catholics marry outside their faith more frequently than those in Poland and at rates comparable to the general UK population. The analysis draws on over 25,000 church marriage records …

    Karolina Czerska-Shaw, Roch Dunin-Wąsowicz•ARTICLE•Globalizations•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 7

The article examines how bottom-up mobilization in response to the Russo-Ukrainian war has enabled the implementation of the Triple Nexus (TN). In conducting in-depth interviews (n:55) with key social actors, this research analyses the practices, collaboration, and complementary actions across the pillars of the TN within the transnational Polish-Ukrainian civic ecosystem. The research highlights the informality and agility of civic ecosystems ke…

  • Geographical Dimensions of Populist Euroscepticism

    Open Access•Roch Dunin-Wąsowicz, Kira Gartzou-Katsouyanni•ARTICLE•Political Studies Review•2025•References: 57

The appeal of populism has been explained by individual preferences expressed along two dimensions: a left-right economic dimension and a cosmopolitan-traditionalist cultural dimension. However, this distinction has been contested by recent studies pointing out that economic and cultural factors reinforce each other in linking structural transformations, like globalisation and technological change, to populist political outcomes. Given the spatia…

  • Bridging the Divide Between Structural and Actor-Oriented Explanations of Populism

    Open Access•Roch Dunin-Wąsowicz, Claudiu Crăciun et al.•ARTICLE•Political Studies Review•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 32

This article explores the intersection of structural and actor-oriented explanations of populism through a territorial perspective, focusing on populist Euroscepticism. It builds on findings from the ‘Local Mobilisation Against the EU. Territorial Dimensions of Populist Euroscepticism’ (EULOC) project, which examined local drivers and manifestations of populism and Euroscepticism across Europe. The article highlights the importance of analysing b…

This article discusses the changing structure, characteristics, and condition of Polish Immigrant Organisations (PIOs) in the United Kingdom, from Poland’s accession to the EU (2004) until the immediate aftermath of the Brexit vote (2017). It suggests that they are an important part of the rich tapestry of civil society actors dealing with migrants’ issues. It finds that the profound heterogenization of the landscape of Polish Immigrant Organisat…

  • The Rainbow Is Burning

    Open Access•Roch Dunin-Wąsowicz, Roch Dunin‐Wąsowicz•ARTICLE•Studies in Ethnicity and…•2016•Cited by: 5•References: 10

This paper examines the meanings and the social function of the Rainbow artwork mounted on one of Warsaw's central squares. It analyses how its public presence became site of the Polish symbolic conflict over LGBT rights, nationhood, and Europe. On the one hand, the Rainbow illuminates existing social cleavages – the way in which Polish national subjectivity is currently reconstructed in relation to undergoing social and civilisational changes af…
