  • Saying sorry in Chinese

Open Access•Puyu Ning, Juliane House et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of World Languages•2026

This paper presents a meta-analysis of apology realisation in Chinese. Drawing on the Cross-Cultural Speech Act Realisation Patterns (CCSARP) framework, we synthesise 38 quantitative studies published between 1990 and 2024 to examine how social distance, power relations, and offence severity influence apology strategy choice. We also assess the effects of study characteristics, such as participants’ age and gender and data collection methods, on …

  • The Drug War and Regional Social Capital in Mexico

Open Access•Julian‐Ferdinand Vögele, Fabian Reck et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of International…•2024

The onset of the war on drugs in Mexico at the beginning of 21 st century had far‐reaching effects on its citizens, including most obviously, an unprecedented increase in the homicide rate. We analyse the correlation between violence on social capital in the 32 federal states of Mexico from January 2004 to December 2016. Given the lack of data in the conflict regions of Mexico, we apply the indirect approach proposed by Guriev and Melnikov (2016)…

  • Similarity of supply and demand shocks in the European Union and acceding countries (implications for the Czech republic and Slovakia)

    Open Access•Jarko Fidrmuc, Eduard Hagara•ARTICLE•Politická ekonomie•2004•Cited by: 1•References: 9

In this contribution, we compare the correlation of supply and demand shocks for the countries of the euro zone and the acceding countries in Central Europe. Demand and supply shocks are recovered from estimated structural VAR models of output growth and inflation in individual countries. We find that Poland and Hungary face already a comparably high similarity with the countries of the current euro zone. However, the remaining countries show sti…

  • Trade Diversion in 'Left-Outs' in Eastward Enlargement of the European Union

    Jarko Fidrmuc•ARTICLE•Europe Asia Studies•1999•Cited by: 1•References: 2

I analyze three scenarios including no Eastward enlargement of the EU and the accession of Central European countries including and excluding Slovakia. The formulation of these scenarios is derived from the evidence on former relations between EU and EFTA as estimated by gravity models for total trade and major SITC one-digit commodity groups. A significant part of Slovakia's extraordinary trade relations with the Czech Republic will diminish if …
