Measuring the association between the opening of a new multi-national restaurant with young people's eating behaviours
Out-of-home eating (takeaway, take-out and fast-foods) is associated with intakes of higher energy and fat, and lower intakes of micronutrients, and is associated with excess weight gain. In 2017, a unique opportunity arose to measure the association between the opening of a new multi-national fast-food restaurant (McDonald's) and consumption of fast-food on young people aged 11–16. This study uses a repeated cross-sectional design to explore gro…
Assessment of Racial/Ethnic Disparities in Hospitalization and Mortality in Patients With Covid-19 in New York City
Importance: Black and Hispanic populations have higher rates of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) hospitalization and mortality than White populations but lower in-hospital case-fatality rates. The extent to which neighborhood characteristics and comorbidity explain these disparities is unclear. Outcomes in Asian American populations have not been explored. Objective: To compare COVID-19 outcomes based on race and ethnicity and assess the assoc…

Playing with Something That Runs: Technology, Improvisation, and Composition in DJ and Laptop Performance
The DJs and laptop performers of electronic dance music use preexistent elements such as records and digital samples to create extended improvisations. Analysis of these technologically mediated performances reveals a complex dynamic in which a modular approach to musical structure enables flexible adaptation and transformation of seemingly “fixed” products in live contexts. Musicians’ improvisational interactions with performance equipment chall…

Taking it seriously: Intertextuality and authenticity in two covers by the Pet Shop Boys
When musicians ‘cover’ a previously recorded song, they provide an intertextual commentary on another musical work or style. This paper considers several ways in which such commentaries engage constructions of authenticity, focusing on two covers by the Pet Shop Boys: ‘Where the Streets Have No Name’, originally by U2, and ‘Go West’, first recorded by the Village People. I analyse the musical sound, performance style, and lyrical themes of each p…
Turning the Beat Around: Reinterpretation, Metrical Dissonance, and Asymmetry in Electronic Dance Music
This paper considers some of the issues involved in the analysis of rhythm and meter in electronic dance music. It begins by considering metrical dissonance and ambiguity within the context of a layered approach to musical meter; it also highlights some of the distinctive ways in which these phenomena are manifested in this repertory. The second half of the paper focuses on the use of asymmetrical patterns in electronic dance music and considers …
Utility of a Multidimensional Locus of Control Scale in Predicting Health and Job-Related Outcomes in Military Environments
This study examined the dimensionality and validity of Levenson's (1973a) multidimensional locus of control scale in two independent samples of Navy enlisted men. It was hypothesized that internal subjects would report better health, greater general satisfaction, and higher levels of family strain due to separation. Given the nature of the military environment, it was expected that external scores would be more pronounced for powerful other rathe…
