Impact of Siblings on Development Across the Lifespan
This paper provides a rare opportunity to see how a sibling relationship contributes centrally to how one finds one’s place in the world of equals. The siblings studied were observed in Mahler’s research nursery study of mother-child pairs, from birth to age 3, and were then followed over a 60-year period with a focus on the evolution of self and object mental representations, the vehicle through which earliest health or pathology is expressed. Looking Forward and Looking Back
Reflecting on my evolving career led me to an appreciation of how my earliest interests and values were developed and applied in multiple ways. An older disturbed sibling created an interest in why people are as they are, and involvement in my parent’s social activism led to a commitment to helping fewer people but in deep ways. I was exposed in my earliest training to the fascinating aspects of earliest mother child interactions patterns. This l…
Aging, Dying, and the Analytic Process
The panel discussion presented at the New York Psychoanalytic Society and Institute's 1066th Scientific Meeting held on June 8, 2023, takes up aging and dying of an analyst and their impact on patients and on the nature of analytic process. Participants reflect on conflicts and challenges arising with more analysts and patients living to an advanced age, on the unregulated nature of analysts’ retirement, and on multilayered meanings of analysts’ …
Thoughts On Medication and Psychoanalysis
The issues involved in split analytic treatments—where a second person manages the patient's medication—are discussed from the point of view of a developmentalist and lay analyst. Case material is presented to illustrate the interplay of medication with other elements of the psychoanalytic situation. Medication and its effects, it is argued, should be accorded no special status apart from other interventions and enactments in an analysis. Some se…
Female Genital Anxieties
The author evaluates developmental and clinical data concerning female genital anxieties in an attempt to address the question of its clinical utility. An effort is made to clarify evidence for female genital anxiety as distinct from castration anxiety in females in the clinical situation and in development. This paper examines these concepts from the perspective of the author's detailed observational and clinical data, which are central to this …
Sex Differences During the Early Separation-Individuation Process
Observations made in a nursery setting of 22 infants 9 to 12 months old suggest that girls become aware of psychological separateness earlier than do boys. The nature of the infant's means of coping, the relation to mother and to play objects, and maternal handling differences are also reported. Implications for gender identity formation are discussed
Sex differences in 2- and 3-years-olds
