  • Bias Approximations for Complex Estimators

    Open Access•Zarrel V Lambert, Albert R Wildt et al.•ARTICLE•Educational and Psychological…•1991

In applied research designed to address conceptual as well as program and policy formulation issues, it is often important to assess the bias present in estimators of association and prediction stemming from the use of multivariate analytical procedures. However, the theoretic sampling distributions of these estimators are often unknown in applied research contexts because of their complexity and the inability to satisfy highly restrictive assump…

  • Approximating Confidence Intervals for Factor Loadings

Zarrel V Lambert, Albert R Wildt et al.•ARTICLE•Multivariate Behavioral Research•1991

Practical theoretic means for assessing the sampling variability of loadings estimated by exploratory factor analytic procedures have not been readily available in the absence of restrictive distributional assumptions. It has been necessary for researchers to interpret these point estimates (loadings) through the use of arbitrary rules-of-thumb. Under these conditions, loading interpretations may be problematic. A method is presented for exploiti…

  • Assessing Sampling Variation Relative to Number-of-Factors Criteria

    Open Access•Zarrel V Lambert, Albert R Wildt et al.•ARTICLE•Educational and Psychological…•1990

Employment of the bootstrap method to approximate the sampling variation of eigenvalues is explicated, and its usefulness is amplified by an illustration in conjunction with two commonly used number-of-factors criteria: eigenvalues larger than one and the scree test. Confidence intervals for eigenvalues are approximated for sample correlation matrices that have ones and squared multiple correlation coefficients on the diagonals. The results demon…

  • Approximate Confidence Intervals for Estimates of Redundancy Between Sets of Variables

Zarrel V Lambert, Albert R Wildt et al.•ARTICLE•Multivariate Behavioral Research•1989

Use of redundancy analysis would be enhanced by having available a procedure that (a) evaluates the statistical significance of the estimated proportion of variance in the criterion variable set extracted by a given predictor variate, Ry i (2), as well as by all predictor variates combined, R(y 2), and (b) is lenient with respect to assumptions about the distributions of redundancy estimates. A previous testing method leaves in doubt the assessme…

  • Identification and Analysis of Moderator Variables

Open Access•Subhash Sharma, Richard M Durand et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Marketing Research•1981

Although the concept of moderator variables has been used extensively in marketing-related studies, much confusion persists as to how they are defined and identified. To alleviate this confusion, the authors present a typology of moderator variables with a framework for identifying their presence and type. Simulated data are used to illustrate and validate the proposed framework.

  • Communicating with the Elderly

    Open Access•Richard M Durand, David L Klemmack et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1980

Governmental agencies, social service programs, and advocacy groups for the elderly often have messages which they would like to communicate to the largest proportion of the elderly population possible. Faced with severely limited public information budgets, they are forced to make choices about which communication mechanisms will reach the largest audience at the least cost per person receiving the message. The purpose of this study is to sugges…

  • Re-Examination of the Relationship between Age and Fear of Aging

    Open Access•David L Klemmack, Richard M Durand et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1980

As is the case with fear of death, fear of aging may be multidimensional (Pollack, 1979). While it is difficult to say which dimension of anxiety about aging was measured, Lester, er al. (1979) found that senior citizens reported significantly less fear of. aging than did college students. Using data gathered from a mail questionnaire to a probability sample of adult Alabamians (1012 or 57.3% of those reached, Ma.. = 48.2 yr., SD = 16.7), persona…

  • Effect of Expectation and Disconfirmation on Postexposure Product Evaluations

    Open Access•James L Taylor, Richard M Durand•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1979

Oliver (1977) recently analyzed the direct effects of consumers' expectations and disconfirmation on posttrial evaluations of products using a hierarchical analysis of variance design. The research reported by Oliver is reevaluated and extended in this paper. A causal model is presented and path analysis used to assess both direct and indirect effects of consumers' expectations and a disconfirming experience on ratings of posttrial affect and int…

  • Previous Jury Service as a Moderating Influence on Jurors' Beliefs and Attitudes

    Open Access•Richard M Durand, William O Bearden et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1978

To ascertain the effect that prior jury service had on beliefs and over-ail attitude towards service, 166 randomly selected registered voters who had been summoned for jury service were administered questionnaires on the first day of their service. Multiple regression analyses were used to examine interrelationships between juror beliefs concerning service and over-all attitudes for both those who had and those who had not served previously. Resu…

  • Consumers' Beliefs, Demographics, and Development of Market Segmentation Strategy

    Open Access•William O Bearden, Richard M Durand•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1977

Evaluative beliefs underlying attitudes toward brands and demographic measures for a panel of 172 respondents were included as sets of variables in four canonical analyses, two brands in each of two product categories. The resulting canonical functions tentatively support the combination of consumers' beliefs about product attributes and the demographic characteristics of those consumers as a means of suggesting both specific segments of consumer…

  • Generalizability of Cognitive Differentiation across Product and Social Domains

    Open Access•Richard M Durand, Zarrel V Lambert•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1976

This study examined the degree to which cognitive differentiation—the capacity to view objects, persons, and events in a multidimensional manner—was generalized across two very different consumer products and interpersonal relations. Substantial generalizability would hold important implications for understanding choice processes. The observed correlations between differentiation scores for the three domains were weak although statistically signi…

  • Dogmatism and Exposure to Political Candidates

    Open Access•Richard M Durand, Zarrel V Lambert•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1975

Formation and change of political as well as other beliefs are a function of a person's exposure to information which is subject partially to his control. He may actively seek or avoid additional information, particularly information that might be discrepant with preconceived opinions. The hypothesis was that Ss with high scores on dogmatism were less willing than Ss with low scores to attend speeches of presidential primary candidates whose view…
