The Indigenous Languages of the Americas
The Indigenous Languages of the Americas: History and Classification is about the American Indian languages, all the Indigenous languages of the Americas. It takes stock of what is known about the history and classification of these languages and language families. It identifies the gaps in knowledge and puts them into perspective, and it assesses differences of opinion. It also resolves some issues and makes new contributions of its own. The boo…

Andrea Louise Campbell a , Lara Shore-Sheppard b , The Social, Political, and Economic Effects of the Affordable Care Act: Introduction to the Issue, RSF: The Russell Sage Foundation Journal of the Social Sciences, Vol. 6, No. 2, The Social, Political, and Economic Effects of the Affordable Care Act (July 2020), pp. 1-40
Climate, disease and society in late-medieval Ireland
Palaeoclimatic data are used to track the significant changes in atmospheric circulation patterns and weather conditions that affected Ireland between 1000 and 1500CE. How these climatic developments and associated shifts in the epidemiological environment were mapped onto Irish society is explored using a tree-ring chronology reflecting the retreat and advance of oak woodland. Years characterised by significant weather-related food scarcities ar…
Real Women Have Skins
Carmen Maria Machado’s story collection Her Body and Other Parties (2017) is steeped in folklore. The story “Real Women Have Bodies” draws on the folklore tradition of the animal or supernatural bride, featuring the disappearance of women despite attempts to retain them. As in enchanted bride stories, these women are associated with an article of clothing that functions as a skin. This essay argues that the story shifts the focus of the tradition…
National Allegory as Feminist Critical Discourse
Novels by Tanella Boni and Véronique Tadjo during Ivory Coast's civil war and its preparation are rife with allegorical elements contributing to the conflicted definition of the nation: its outside and its inside, its potential for solidarity and its exclusionary pathology, considered on the ground and from the diaspora. Each through female characters navigating identity on shifting grounds, Boni and Tadjo reframe what it means to be Ivorian and …
Response to Critics
This paper is the response of the author to a series of criticisms from Todd Lekan, Greg Moses, and John Capps at the 2018 SAAP Meeting. It begins with some consideration of the climate in American philosophical circles in the 1970s, and turns to a series of responses to the critics' questions. The overall empasis is on the importance of pluralism
Bluebeard and the Beast
I examine Brontë's use of fairy tales and supernatural lore in Jane Eyre (1847) to reveal a battle taking place over the course of the novel between two incompatible but entwined fairy-tale models: "Beauty and the Beast" and "Bluebeard." These initially similar tales make different conclusions about the relationship between self and Other: whereas the heroine of "Bluebeard" distinguishes herself from her murdered predecessors, "Beauty and the Bea…

Relational Contract and the Nature of Private Ordering
This paper focuses on the enormous growth of contract in the public sector over the last twenty years as part of the development of the "new public management." In the United Kingdom, the most penetrating assessment of the significance of this growth for the law of contract, its theory and its use, is Peter Vincent-Jones's The New Public Contracting, the thrust of which has been the basis of Vincent-Jones's contribution to this issue, The New Pub…
