Respawning the Hero: Metapolitics, Historical Fiction Video Games and the Shifting Strategies and Subjectivities of Far-right Influencers
This article critically examines how far-right influencers engage with historical fiction video games to articulate far-right cultural imaginaries. Through a Multimodal Critical Discourse Analysis of “Let's Play” videos and video essays, it explores how far-right influencers negotiate temporal imaginaries, antagonisms, and subject positions within platformed gaming content. Moving beyond existing work on reactionary politics in gamer culture, I d…

Transphobic Truth Markets: Comparing Trans-hostile Discourses in British Trans-exclusionary Radical Feminist and US Right-wing Movements
British "Trans-Exclusionary Radical Feminist" (TERF) discourse has often been contextualised in fringe radical feminist thought, but its similarities to and alliances with right-wing trans-exclusionary movements in the US are notable (McClean, 2020). To understand the place of TERF discourse in an international wave of trans-hostility, it is necessary to understand how it converges with and differs from explicitly conservative counterparts. I pla…
Constructing homonationalist identities in relation to religious and LGBTQ+ outgroups: A case study of r/RightWingLGBT
Recent research on homonationalism addresses the ideological and electoral combination of LGBTQ+ politics and radical-right populism. However, right-wing LGBTQ+ identities remain seemingly paradoxical, as right-wing Christianity-rooted conservatism is generally hostile to LGBTQ+ empowerment. Grounded in literature on populist radical right and its relationship with religion and sexuality, as well as social identity theory, we argue that right-win…
Quality of Care in the Social Services: Research Agenda and Methods
In an era of heightened accountability, remarkably little is known empirically about the quality of social work services. This article applies insights from health services research to propose a research agenda on the quality of care in the social services. The agenda calls for studies that address the definition of quality service, variations in quality, the relationship between quality service and outcomes, structural influences on quality, and…
Persons with dual diagnoses of substance abuse and major mental illness: Their excess costs of psychiatric care
OBJECTIVES. This study examined the costs of psychiatric treatment for seriously mentally ill people with comorbid substance abuse as compared with mentally ill people not abusing substances. METHODS. Three different sources of data were used to construct client-level files to compare the patterns of care and expenditures of 16,395 psychiatrically disabled Medicaid beneficiaries with and without substance abuse: Massachusetts Medicaid paid claims…
Containing mental health treatment costs through program design: A Massachusetts study
A single site pre-post study of seriously mentally ill patients treated in a public mental health system shows that annual treatment costs can be substantially reduced with the use of day hospital treatment. Two cohorts of psychiatric patients--282 consecutive admissions to a traditional public inpatient unit in 1980, and 340 consecutive admissions to a combination of inpatient and day hospital care in 1984--were followed 12 months after admissio…
