A Neuroarchitectural Framework for the Age-Friendly Built Environment
Space is a physical, structured entity defined by measurable dimensions and geographical coordinates. Place, by contrast, has meaning and value, which are created through people’s experience and social interaction. Despite growing interest in age-friendly urban environments, limited research has examined how older adults perceive visual complexity and how it influences their well-being. This study examines the concept of place through the lens of…
Understanding Circularity Knowledge Across the General Public–Expert Spectrum
Circular Economy is increasingly recognized as a multidimensional transition necessary for resource efficiency in the built environment; however, its implementation is hindered by fragmentation. This study investigates the dynamics of circularity knowledge across the public-expert spectrum using a psychometrically validated instrument supported by Item Response Theory. Empirical data were collected from the Netherlands, Belgium, Poland, Türkiye, …
Shaping age-friendly cities and communities
Assessing food self-sufficiency of selected European Functional Urban Areas vs metropolitan areas
The resilience of the local food system is being underlined as one of the most important strategic goals for a sustainable future. However, since the question of what constitutes the local scale of food production depends largely on the type of product and supply chain, the associated foodshed can range from a site scale, city and city region up to wider region and country level. As a proof of concept whether functional urban areas (FUAs) can ser…
Effectiveness of strategic environmental assessment in Poland
The paper presents the results of an evaluation of the effectiveness of SEA obtained as a result of a survey with the participation of stakeholders. In Poland, several hundred SEAs are conducted annually at the local and regional levels and several at the national level. Although the survey demonstrated that SEA is evaluated as effective or quite effective, the respondents pointed to several irregularities in the non-procedural dimension of effec…
The application of ecological footprint and biocapacity for environmental carrying capacity assessment
Contemporary socio-environmental problems such as the reduced availability of natural resources, the loss of biodiversity, soil degradation, pollution, an unprecedented population growth, the mass migration of people to cities, and urban sprawl may be associated with the consequences of an economic infinite growth paradigm on a finite planet. Despite international goals for improving the spatial and environmental management, current and future de…
