  • Colonial Complexions

    Open Access•Tyson Reeder•ARTICLE•Journal of American History•2022

In a dark paradox, missing-persons advertisements have proven invaluable to reconstructing the lives of enslaved people. For decades, historians have used such advertisements to study the history of slavery and labor beyond the component of self-liberation. Sharon Block has innovated a new use of those records: reconstructing the construction of race in early America. Rather than use those advertisements to offer “extended life experiences” of en…

For all of the ink and paper spent on the history of ink and paper during the American Revolutionary era, the men and women behind printed material have remained obscure except for a few prominent figures such as Benjamin Franklin and Mathew Carey. Nobrezas do Novo Mundo (The nobility of the New World) represents a welcome addition to the growing literature on the social dynamics of colonial Latin America, particularly Brazil. By combining discussions of race and nobility, Ronald Raminelli brings his audience beyond narratives of Brazilian colonial society dichotomized into black and white, master and slave. He unveils race as a multivalent concept in colonial Brazil—one that did not preclu…
