    Open Access•Albert Baiburin, Альберт Байбурин•ARTICLE•Kunstkamera•2026

The article examines issues related to the introduction of calendar age into the cultural practices of Russians. Chronological age calculation was practically not used in folk culture. • Forum 66

Andrey Adelfinskiy, Maria Akhmetova et al.•ARTICLE•Antropologicheskij forum•2025

Every era has its own “mainstream scholarly style” — the generally accepted way of writing academic texts in а given era and place. To today’s tastes, many academic texts written a century and more ago seem verbose and impersonal, weighed down with dispensable reflections and ruminations. Soviet academic style was radically different from English-language publications of the time, but these days many Russian academic texts read like translations …

  • Object in Museum Dialogues

    Open Access•Albert Baiburin•ARTICLE•Kunstkamera•2024

The world of things has been and remains the foundation of museum work. The article deals with the peculiarities of interaction with museum objects in an ethnographic museum. Such interactions (dialogues) are aimed at constructing ideas about the past and the alien, since an ethnographic museum is focused not only on the past (like any museum), but also on other (alien) cultural traditions. When considering things, the starting point is that they…

  • Element Sequence in the Name Formula in Russian Tradition

    Open Access•Albert Baiburin, Albert K Baiburin•ARTICLE•

  • Soviet and Post-Soviet Identities

Open Access•Ronald Grigor Suny, Nancy Condee et al.•BOOK•Soviet and Post-Soviet Identities•2012

Since the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, questions of identity have dominated the culture not only of Russia, but of all the countries of the former Soviet bloc. This timely collection examines the ways in which cultural activities such as fiction, TV, cinema, architecture and exhibitions have addressed these questions and also describes other cultural flashpoints, from attitudes to language to the use of passports. It discusses definitions of p…

  • Ritual Forms of Gender Identification in Children

    Albert Baiburin, A K Baiburin•ARTICLE•Anthropology & Archeology of…•1993

Among the eastern Slavs, as among many peoples, a child is regarded as something of a genderless being until a certain age. Gender-neutral terms (such as ditia relative to infants), or collective ones (such as meloct'[small change], tvarnia[stuff], blaznota[blessed bunch], and others) were used relative to infants. Indicating the uncompletedness of their status is, for example, the Russian custom of calling an infant a boy, regardless of its gend…

  • The Problem of "The Individual and Tradition" in the Works of J. Pentikkainen

    Albert Baiburin, A K Baiburin•ARTICLE•Soviet Anthropology and Archeology•1983

Recently the well-known Finnish ethnologist, linguist, and folklorist J. Pentikkainen has published a series of works devoted to the study of the world-view of Marina Takalo (1890-1970), a remarkable bearer of traditional Karelian culture. (1) The results of almost a decade (1960-1969) of J. Pentikkainen's intensive work with Marina Takalo can without hesitation be called unique. Here, probably for the first time in world science, a single person…
