The afterlives of toxic waste sites
Calls for land frugality and densification foster interest for brownfield remediation and redevelopment. Existing research often focuses on successful case studies and best redevelopment practices, providing a biased view of the actual development trajectories of brownfields over time. In response, this article proposes a longitudinal study of 41 toxic waste disposal sites identified in 1985 by Québec’s Ministry of Environment in the metropolitan…
In contrast to many industrialized cities, Montreal stopped incinerating its solid waste more than thirty years ago. The urban ruin of the des Carrières incinerator reminds us that the city of Montreal also chose to burn its household waste for most of the twentieth century. This article explores the factors that explain the abandonment of this waste treatment technology. To do so, it studies the case of the des Carrières incinerator, opened in 1…
Bungalows and oil tanks
Oil refineries are important nodes in the infrastructure of petroleum, transforming crude oil into marketable products. They are often implanted far from dense urban centers because of the nuisances they bring. But sometimes they are found in cities, confronting the cleanliness and the efficiency of the modern infrastructural ideal with the pollution and toxicity that oil refining entails. The eastern end of the island of Montréal used to be Cana…

The Role of Forecasts in Planning for Energy Infrastructure
Forecasts play a central role in the development of energy infrastructure. Since building energy infrastructure is long and costly, energy system planners try to anticipate future demand to avoid both shortages and overcapacity. But energy demand forecasts aren’t neutral: they represent a certain vision of the future that forecasters hope to bring into being. This article uses a historical case study to open the black box of forecasting and the w…
Mobilizing Suburban Stereotypes
In this article, we examine how in the 1960s the political leadership in Anjou, a suburban community in the Greater Montreal region, cultivated the stereotypical ideal of a bourgeois residential suburb in contrast with its actual dynamics of development in the metropolitan region. Our analysis focuses on three dimensions of the suburban ideal: residential monofunctionalism, political autonomy, and an exclusive and apolitical community. For each o…

Katherine Zubovich, Moscow Monumental. Soviet Skyscrapers and Urban Life in Stalin’s Capital
