  • Accuracy in Self-Reported Health Insurance Coverage among Medicaid Enrollees

Open Access•Kathleen Thiede Call, Gestur Davidson et al.•ARTICLE•INQUIRY The Journal of Health…•2008

The largest portion of the Medicaid undercount is caused by survey reporting error--that is, Medicaid recipients misreport their enrollment in health insurance coverage surveys. In this study, we sampled known Medicaid enrollees to learn how they respond to health insurance questions and to document correlates of accurate and inaccurate reports. We found that Medicaid enrollees are fairly accurate reporters of insurance status and type of coverag…

  • Estimating Regression Standard Errors with Data from the Current Population Survey's Public Use File

Open Access•Michael Davern, Arthur Jones et al.•ARTICLE•INQUIRY The Journal of Health…•2007

This study examines whether reasonable standard errors for multivariate models can be calculated using the public use file of the Current Population Survey's Annual Social and Economic Supplement (CPS ASEC). We restrict our analysis to the 2003 CPS ASEC and model three dependent variables at the individual level. income, poverty, and health insurance coverage. We compare standard error estimates performed on the CPS ASEC public use file with thos…

  • Pharmacist Staffing, Technology Use, and Implementation of Medication Safety Practices in Rural Hospitals

Open Access•Michelle Casey, Michelle M Casey et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Rural Health•2006

Context: Medication safety is clearly an important quality issue for rural hospitals. However, rural hospitals face special challenges implementing medication safety practices in terms of their staffing and financial and technical resources. Purpose: This study assessed the capacity of small rural hospitals to implement medication safety practices, with particular focus on pharmacist staffing and the availability of technology. Methods: A telepho…

  • Unstable Inferences? An Examination of Complex Survey Sample Design Adjustments Using the Current Population Survey for Health Services Research

Open Access•Michael Davern, Arthur Jones et al.•ARTICLE•INQUIRY The Journal of Health…•2006

Statistical analysis of the Current Population Survey's Annual Social and Economic Supplement is used widely in health services research. However, the statistical evidence cited from the Current Population Survey (CPS) is not always consistent because researchers use a variety of methods to produce standard errors that are fundamental to significance tests. This analysis examines the 2002 Annual Social and Economic Supplement's (ASEC) estimates o…

  • Uncovering the Missing Medicaid Cases and Assessing their Bias for Estimates of the Uninsured

Open Access•Kathleen Thiede Call, Gestur Davidson et al.•ARTICLE•INQUIRY The Journal of Health…•2001

General population surveys of health insurance coverage are thought to undercount Medicaid enrollment, which may bias estimates of the uninsured. This article describes the results of an experiment undertaken in conjunction with a general population survey in Minnesota. Responses to health insurance questions by a known sample of public program enrollees are analyzed to determine possible reasons for the undercount and the amount of bias introduc…

  • Productivity in Minnesota Dental Practices with Increased Visits by Older Patients

Open Access•Stephen K Shuman, Michael J Loupe et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Public Health Dentistry•1994

There is little scientific information on the economic impact of treating increased numbers of older adults, despite the current growth in this population. To assess the impact of patient age on dental practice productivity, we evaluated an economic production function that included the proportions of patient visits in two older age groups (61-69 years, 70+ years) as factors that might affect the dental service production process. We used data fr…

  • What Cost Case Management in Long-Term Care

Rosalie A Kane, Joan D Penrod et al.•ARTICLE•Social Service Review•1991

We describe data from a convenience sample of 48 case management programs, illustrating variation in both program features and costs. Case management varied in practice and in ways that affect both the cost of case management and the costs of services being managed. Nonetheless, information linking cost to client characteristics, client outcomes, or even case management inputs is rare. Implications for research and policy in case management in lo…

  • Substitution of Formal and Informal Care for the Community-Based Elderly

Ira Moscovice, Gestur Davidson et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•1988

The Minnesota Pre-Admission Screening/Alternative Care Grants Program screens those at risk of nursing home placement and funds services that will allow the elderly to be cared for at home. Information was collected for a 1-year period on client placement, health and functional status, informal support, use of health and formal services, and care-giver characteristics for 214 clients screened during the last quarter of 1984. A two-equation model …

  • Health Care and Insurance Loss of Working AFDC Recipients

    Ira Moscovice, Gestur Davidson•ARTICLE•Medical Care•1987

The federal Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1981 (OBRA) produced substantial changes in the Aid to Families With Dependent Children (AFDC) program. The main effect of the changes has been the denial of assistance and hence Medicaid coverage to many AFDC recipients with jobs. Our analysis of the health care and insurance loss of working AFDC recipients in Hennepin County, Minnesota, found that the vast majority (87%) of families that were ter…
