  • Maternal employment characteristics as a structural social determinant of breastfeeding duration

Open Access•Pauline Brugaillères, Séverine Deguen et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Public Health•2024

Background The European Region exhibits the world’s lowest exclusive breastfeeding rate at 6 months. Addressing work-related breastfeeding challenges is crucial, particularly for women navigating precarious work situations, compounding their adversity. This scoping review surveys research on maternal employment characteristics facilitating breastfeeding continuation post-return to work in the European Region. Methods Studies from 2013 to 2023 wer…

  • Les inégalités environnementales et sociales de santé en France, un champ de recherche à développer

    Séverine Deguen, Wahida Kihal-Talantikite•ARTICLE•Journal of Evidence-Informed…•2022•References: 12

  • Impact of Longitudinal Social Support and Loneliness Trajectories on Mental Health during the Covid-19 Pandemic in France

Open Access•Sandy Laham, Leticia Bertuzzi et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

    (1) Background: Little is known about how the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted social support and loneliness over time and how this may predict subsequent mental health problems. This study aims to determine longitudinal trajectories of social support and loneliness in the French general population during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic and study whether variations in these trajectories are associated with symptoms of depression and anxiety…

  • Geographical Pattern of Covid-19-Related Outcomes over the Pandemic Period in France: A Nationwide Socio-Environmental Study

    Open Access•Séverine Deguen, Wahida Kihal-Talantikite•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

Our findings suggest that the geographic pattern of COVID-19-related outcomes is largely explained by socio-spatial distribution of long-term exposure to NO 2 . However, to better understand spatial variations of COVID-19-related outcomes, it would be necessary to investigate and adjust it for other determinants. Thus, the current sanitary crisis reminds us of how unequal we all are in facing this disease

  • Measuring Burden of Disease Attributable to Air Pollution Due to Preterm Birth Complications and Infant Death in Paris Using Disability-Adjusted Life Years (Dalys)

Open Access•Séverine Deguen, Guadalupe Perez Marchetta et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020

Several studies have found maternal exposure to particulate matter pollution was associated with adverse birth outcomes, including infant mortality and preterm birth. In this context, our study aims to quantify the air pollution burden of disease due to preterm birth complications and infant death in Paris, with particular attention to people living in the most deprived census blocks. Data on infant death and preterm birth was available from the …

  • Influence of Individual and Contextual Perceptions and of Multiple Neighborhoods on Depression

Open Access•Médicoulé Traoré, Cécile Vuillermoz et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020

The risk of depression is related to multiple various determinants. The consideration of multiple neighborhoods daily frequented by individuals has led to increased interest in analyzing socio-territorial inequalities in health. In this context, the main objective of this study was (i) to describe and analyze the spatial distribution of depression and (ii) to investigate the role of the perception of the different frequented spaces in the risk of…

  • Adverse Birth Outcomes as Indicators of Poor Fetal Growth Conditions in a French Newborn Population—A Stratified Analysis by Neighborhood Deprivation Level

Open Access•Wahida Kihal-Talantikite, Pauline Le Nouveau et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2019

Background : Adverse birth outcomes are related to unfavorable fetal growth conditions. A latent variable, named Favorable Fetal Growth Condition (FFGC), has been defined by Bollen et al., in 2013; he showed that this FFGC latent variable mediates the effects of maternal characteristics on several birth outcomes. Objectives : The objectives of the present study were to replicate Bollen's approach in a population of newborns in Paris and to invest…

  • Using a Clustering Approach to Investigate Socio-Environmental Inequality in Preterm Birth—A Study Conducted at Fine Spatial Scale in Paris (France)

Open Access•Séverine Deguen, Nina E Ahlers et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2018

Background & Objectives : Today, to support public policies aiming to tackle environmental and health inequality, identification and monitoring of the spatial pattern of adverse birth outcomes are crucial. Spatial identification of the more vulnerable population to air pollution may orient health interventions. In this context, the objective of this study is to investigate the geographical distribution of the risk of preterm birth (PTB, gestation…

  • Premature Adult Death and Equity Impact of a Reduction of NO2, PM10, and PM2.5 Levels in Paris—A Health Impact Assessment Study Conducted at the Census Block Level

    Open Access•Wahida Kihal-Talantikite, Pierre Legendre et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2018

Background : To support environmental policies aiming to tackle air pollution, quantitative health impact assessments (HIAs) stand out as one of the best decision-making tools. However, no risk assessment studies have quantified or mapped the health and equity impact of air pollution reduction at a small spatial scale. Objectives : We developed a small-area analysis of the impact of air pollution on "premature" death among an adult population ove…

  • Environmental justice in Western Europe

Heike Köckler, Séverine Deguen et al.•CHAPTER•The Routledge Handbook of…•2017

This chapter provides an overview of the variety of topics and methods that characterize the evolving set of environmental justice discourses in Western Europe. It shows the environmental justice as more than an analytical concept integrating social and environmental factors. The chapter introduces the range of discourses on environmental justice in Western Europe through an overview that focuses on the forms of concern and normativity that have …

  • Do Individual and Neighborhood Characteristics Influence Perceived Air Quality

Open Access•Séverine Deguen, Manon Padilla et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2017

Background : Despite improvements, air pollution still remains a major public health issue. Numerous epidemiological studies have demonstrated the adverse health effects of air pollution exposure based on modeled measures, but only a few have considered the health impact of perceived air quality. Improving our knowledge of individual perceptions is crucial to defining targeted actions and promoting appropriate intervention measures. Our objective…

  • City-Specific Spatiotemporal Infant and Neonatal Mortality Clusters: Links with Socioeconomic and Air Pollution Spatial Patterns in France

    Open Access•Cindy Padilla, Wahida Kihal-Talantikit et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2016

Infant and neonatal mortality indicators are known to vary geographically, possibly as a result of socioeconomic and environmental inequalities. To better understand how these factors contribute to spatial and temporal patterns, we conducted a French ecological study comparing two time periods between 2002 and 2009 for three (purposefully distinct) Metropolitan Areas (MAs) and the city of Paris, using the French census block of parental residence…

  • Assessment of the spatial accessibility to health professionals at French census block level

Open Access•Fei Gao, Wahida Kihal et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal for Equity…•2016

ISA is a multidimensional and improved measure, which combines the volume of services relative to population size with the proximity of services relative to the population's location, available at the smallest feasible geographical scale. It could guide policy makers towards highlighting critical areas in need of more healthcare providers, and these areas should be earmarked for further knowledge-based policy making

  • Quantifying Vulnerability to Extreme Heat in Time Series Analyses: A Novel Approach Applied to Neighborhood Social Disparities under Climate Change

Open Access•Tarik Benmarhnia, Patrick Grenier et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2015

We propose a new analytical approach for estimating vulnerability in the relationship between heat and health. Our results suggest that in Paris and Montreal, health disparities related to heat impacts exist today and will increase in the future

  • Measuring Spatial Environmental Deprivation: A New Index and its Application in France

Open Access•Tarik Benmarhnia, Lucie Laurian et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Justice•2013

Despite increasingly stringent environmental regulations, industrial and transportation emissions continue impact public health. Since vulnerable populations bear a disproportionate burden of environmental risks, spatial differentials in environmental exposure contribute to social disparities in health outcomes. Environmental Justice (EJ) analyses tend to focus either on the location of selected point or nonpoint pollution on a whole territory (t…

  • A statistical procedure to create a neighborhood socioeconomic index for health inequalities analysis

Open Access•Benoît Lalloué, Jean-Marie Monnez et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal for Equity…•2013

The proposed procedure is statistically justified and robust. It can be applied to multiple geographical areas or socioeconomic variables and provides meaningful information to public health bodies. We highlight the importance of the classification method. We propose an R package in order to use this procedure
