Innovations in French Negation: A Cognitive Grammar Account
Predicate and phrase negation marking developed from Latin non to Old French ne in pre-verbal position. During the Old French period a small number of emphatic reinforcement elements added after the verb (such as pas "step" and personne "person") became negative polarity items in contexts such as 'not walking a step', 'not seeing a [single] person'.
