Reflections on Political Culture in Three Spheres
After considering what is meant by ‘political culture’, this chapter looks at how such an abstraction can be applied to the long period between c .700 and c .1500, over vast stretches of the western Eurasian landmass. The author looks for recurring themes – not grand theory, but rather elements visible in and shared by societies in the three spheres of the Latin west, Byzantium and the Islamic world in this period. Four such elements are suggeste…

Between Memory and Desire: The Middle East in a Troubled Age
Middle Easterners today are caught between memories of the past and frustrated hopes for the future. They struggle to find solutions to crises of economic stagnation, political gridlock, and cultural identity. In recent decades Islam has become central to this struggle, and almost every issue involves fierce, sometimes violent debates over the role of religion in public life. R Stephen Humphreys' new book presents a much-needed and thoughtful ana…
Islamic Egypt 640-1517
The Cambridge History of Egypt offers the first comprehensive English-language treatment of Egyptian history through thirteen centuries, from the Arab conquest to the present day. The two-volume survey considers the political, socio-economic and cultural history of the world's oldest state, summarizing the debates and providing insight into controversies. As Egypt reclaims a leading role in the Islamic, Arab and Afro-Asian worlds, the project sta…
Egypt in the world system of the later Middle Ages
In Islamic times, as in all other phases of its long history, Egypt cannot be comprehended or analyzed in isolation. It was always embedded in a series of larger complexes, whether political, economic, or cultural. Whether it is useful to call the totality of these complexes a "world system" is a question best deferred until a later point in this chapter. Whatever we call them, these complexes were constantly evolving and shifting, as was Egypt's…

The Expressive Intent of the Mamluk Architecture of Cairo: A Preliminary Essay
Although we have a great many monographs concerning the buildings erected under Mamluk patronage in Cairo, so that we know a good deal not only about their plans and construction per se, but also about the scope of the artistic and technical influences out of which the tradition which they represent was fashioned, it is nevertheless premature to attempt a genuine synthetic history of the Mamluk architecture of Cairo. The reason for this opinion l…
