The Aggregated Latent Profile Index
Multivariate assessment profiles contain two conceptually distinct sources of variation: overall level and profile shape. Existing approaches recover some aspects of this structure, but none jointly establishes the replicability of latent pattern dimensions and provides a principled, population-referenced summary of person profile differentiation independent of overall level. We introduce the Aggregated Latent Profile Index (ALPI), a variance-wei…
Concerted cultivation and parental satisfaction
This study bridges two literatures by asking how the intensive parenting style called concerted cultivation affects one aspect of parental well-being: parental satisfaction. We employ Profile Analysis via Principal Component Analysis to identify patterns of responses to questions about parenting style among 432 U.S. parents who responded to an online survey. Two profiles are identified, one of which resembles the time use dimension of concerted c…
Relationships Between Workplace Deviance Interacted With Gender and Marital Status
This exploratory study employed correspondence analysis to examine how employees' gender and marital status might affect levels of interpersonal and organizational deviant workplace behaviors in the workplace. The subjects were 122 employees from a large electricity supplier company in Israel. Four levels of deviant behaviors relating to interpersonal and organizational deviance behaviors were generated according to their "typicality" as follows:…
Utilizing correspondence analysis to characterize the mental health of cardiac patients with diabetes
The aim of this study was to examine the mental health of cardiac patients with diabetes and whether symptoms varied by gender and/or age. Screening for depression and posttraumatic stress symptoms was conducted on 1003 patients with cardiovascular disease. Correspondence analysis was utilized to identify clinical core profiles. Results suggested that cardiovascular disease patients with diabetes, particularly males, experience high rates of depr…
A Profile Approach to Child Care Quality, Quantity, and Type of Setting
Building on prior variable-oriented research which demonstrates the independence of the associations of child care quality, quantity, and type of setting with family factors and child outcomes, the current study identifies four profiles of child care dimensions from the NICHD Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development. Profiles accounted for 73% of total variance in 10 child care variables measured for 489 6-month-olds in nonparental child c…
Patterns of Consumer Usage of Homeless Outreach Services
Outreach programs are a vital part of the continuum of services for the home- less. To investigate the characteristics of consumers of such programs and the services they receive, a sample of 446 clients of a homeless outreach program in New York City was divided into those who visited only once, two to three times, and four or more times during a 1-month period. Chi-square analyses revealed that the groups differed significantly with regard to p…
The relationship of religious coping and spirituality to adjustment and psychological distress in urban early adolescents
The present study explored the relation of religious coping and spirituality to adjustment and psychological distress in urban early adolescents. The participants were 76 sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-grade students attending Catholic day schools in the New York City area. They completed a set of self-report measures assessing religious coping, daily spiritual experiences, positive and negative affect, life satisfaction, and psychological distress…
Factor Analytic Modeling of Within Person Variation in Score Profiles
A profile is a vector of scores for one examinee. The mean score in the vector can be interpreted as a measure of overall profile height, the variance can be interpreted as a measure of within person variation, and the ipsatized vector of score deviations about the mean can be said to describe the pattern in the score profile. A within person pattern interpretation of orthogonal factor loadings is developed. A statistic is proposed to index the a…
Confirmatory Factor Analysis and Profile Analysis via Multidimensional Scaling
This paper describes the Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) parameterization of the Profile Analysis via Multidimensional Scaling (PAMS) model to demonstrate validation of profile pattern hypotheses derived from multidimensional scaling (MDS). Profile Analysis via Multidimensional Scaling (PAMS) is an exploratory method for identifying major profiles in a multi-subtest test battery. Major profile patterns are represented as dimensions extracted f…
Estimating Cognitive Profiles Using Profile Analysis via Multidimensional Scaling (Pams)
Two of the most popular methods of profile analysis, cluster analysis and modal profile analysis, have limitations. First, neither technique is adequate when the sample size is large. Second, neither method will necessarily provide profile information in terms of both level and pattern. A new method of profile analysis, called Profile Analysis via Multidimensional Scaling (PAMS; Davison, 1996), is introduced to meet the challenge. PAMS extends th…
High School Mathematics Course-Taking by Gender and Ethnicity
The 1990 NAEP transcript data were used to study the number of Carnegie units (CUs) earned by students in seven categories of mathematics courses plus a miscellaneous category. On average, students earned 3.11 CUs, slightly more than the minimum of 3 suggested in A Nation at Risk ( National Commission on Excellence in Education, 1983 ). Fifty-four percent of the CUs were earned in the standard high school sequence (Algebra 1 and 2 and geometry), …
