Sasanian historiography
Sasanian historiography is a problematic field, as almost all Middle Persian historical texts have disappeared, and even their Arabic translations are not extant, so we have to approach it based on two existing Middle Persian texts, references to lost Arabic translations, and the historical material preserved in Arabic and New Persian sources. The present chapter maps the extant material and gives an overview on what Sasanian historiography was. …

When Scheherazade Fails: The Story of Balāsh and the Indian Princess
The originally Persian Balāsh and the Princess (eighth or ninth century) is only preserved in translation in anonymous Arabic works, Nihāyat al-arab (and its later Persian translation, Tajāribal-umam) and ps.-AL-JĀḤIẒ, Maḥāsin. Its frame story is remarkably similar to that of the Arabian Nights, which is assumed to have been translated into Arabic at the same time as Balāsh. The article traces its early history and analyses it, discussing the use…
The Letters of Shahrbarāz and Middle Persian Historiography on the Last Great War of Late Antiquity
The article analyses stories about letters sent by Kisrā Abarwīz to his general Shahrbarāz during the last Great War of Late Antiquity. The analysis sheds light on Middle Persian historiography and the transmission of historical information in the Late Sasanian and Early Islamic periods, information we need in order to understand the history of the period. Based on the study of this episode, supported by wider evidence, the article suggests that …
Between Arabic and Persian Traditions: The maqāmas of Ḥamīd al-Dīn Balḫī
The article analyses the ways Ḥamīd al-Dīn Balḫī (d. 559/1164) adopted and adapted the technique of earlier Arabic authors, most notably al-Ḥarīrī (d. 516/1122), in his Persian maqāmas . It also emends the traditional dating of his maqāma collection
Translations of Historical Works from Middle Persian into Arabic
This article maps the mainly lost Sasanian historiographical literature through the Arabic translations of Middle Persian works and the information preserved in early Arabic sources. Although only two texts have been preserved in the original Middle Persian, the Arabic sources reveal a sizeable corpus in translation
Sharwīn of Dastabay: Reconstructing an early Persian Tale
The article discusses a little-known lost Persian tale, The Story of Sharwin of Dastabay , and traces references to it in Arabic, Persian, and Byzantine sources. The earliest references to the story come from the mid- to late eighth century, and it seems to have remained well known in Arabic and Persian literature until the early twelfth and possibly the early fourteenth century, while Byzantine literature shows that at least some of its elements…

Scripture, Poetry and the Making of a Community: Read-ing the Qurʾān as a Literary Text, by Angelika Neuwirth
(First two paragraphs) Over the last decades, Professor Angelika Neuwirth (Freie Universität, Berlin) has become one of the leading figures of Qurʾānic studies and the Corpus Coranicum project led by her is a major attempt to develop the field. Scripture, Poetry and the Making of a Community collects together twelve articles published by Neuwirth in 1991-2009, adding two new articles that do not seem to have been published elsewhere, as well as a…
Al-Khansā’’s poem in -ālahā and its Qur’ānic echoes. The long and the short of it
This article studies two questions related to al-Khansā'’s mutaqārib poem, rhyming in -ālahā: how was it changed through anthologisation and what is its relation to the Qur'ān and Surah 99? Whereas the six-verse excerpt in al-Mubarrad's Kāmil is full of Qur'ānic echoes, the Dīwān version of the poem has few such echoes. The analysis, however, opens up a possibility that the Qur'ān's first audience may well have recognised in Surah 99 features fam…

Concepts of Authorship in Pre-Modern Arabic Texts
1 This goes along with a reduction in complexity we should be aware of.Jannidis et al., "Rede ber den Autor an die Gebildeten unter seinen Verchtern," 32 (for bibliographical details, see "introduction"). 2 It is rather difficult to produce a comprehensive list of all possible authorial functions. It is also true that there are many different terms and definitions, such as "precursory authorship", "executive authorship", "collaborative authorship"…
The Cambridge History of Arabic Literature: Arabic Literature in the Post-Classical Period
"The final volume of The Cambridge History of Arabic Literature explores the Arabic literary heritage of the little-known period from the twelfth to the beginning of the nineteenth century. Even though it was during this time that the famous Thousand and One Nights was composed, very little has been written on the literature of the period generally. In this volume Roger Allen and Donald Richards bring together some of the most distinguished schol…
Middle Eastern Studies in Finland
The tradition of Middle Eastern studies in Finland is long but rather thin. The chair for Oriental Languages (mainly Hebrew and Aramaic) was established at Turku University in 1640, changing its name (Linguarum Orientalium Professio) several times over the years before becoming Semitic Languages. After the great fire destroyed almost the whole city of Turku, the university was relocated to Helsinki in 1828. In the mid-19 th century, the chair was…

Ibn Shuhayd and his "Risālat al-twābiʿ wa 'l-zawābiʿ"
Ibn Shuhayd's (d. 1035) Risālat al-tawābiʿ has been preserved in fragments in Ibn Bassām's al-Dhakhīra. The early eleventh century was a period of great experimentation in narrative prose. Just a few decades before Ibn Shuhayd wrote his work, al-Hamadhānī had written his maqāmas on the other side of the Islamic world. The Risālat al-tawābiʿ comes into the margin of maqāma literature. The original structure of the treatise is reconstructable to a …
