Impact of Table-Top Robots on Questionnaire Response Rates at a Science Museum
To facilitate the integration of robot applications in real environments, evaluating whether or how much the presence of a robot entity influences human behavior is important. In addition, it is necessary to evaluate the influence of voice-only systems, which can be implemented more easily than robots. Therefore, in this study, we conducted two experiments to evaluate the visitor behavior at a science museum when requested to respond to a questio…
Comparison of Outcomes Between Robot-Assisted Language Learning System and Human Tutors
This study explores how much current mainstream Robot-Assisted Language Learning (RALL) systems produce outcomes compared to human tutors instructing a typical English conversation lesson. To this end, an experiment was conducted with 26 participants divided in RALL (14 participants) and human tutor (12 participants) groups. All participants took a pre-test on the first day, followed by 30 min of study per day for 7 days, and 3 post-tests on the …
Is Politeness Better than Impoliteness? Comparisons of Robot's Encouragement Effects Toward Performance, Moods, and Propagation
This study experimentally compared the effects of encouragement with polite/ impolite attitudes from a robot in a monotonous task from three viewpoints: performance, mood, and propagation. Experiment I investigated encouragement effects on performance and mood. The participants did a monotonous task during which a robot continuously provided polite, neutral, or impolite encouragement. Our experiment results showed that polite and impolite encoura…
Sharing Experiences to Help a Robot Present Its Mind and Sociability
Many social robots have emerged in public places to serve people. For these services, the robots are assumed to be able to present internal aspects (i.e., mind, sociability) to engage and interact with people over the long term. In this paper, we propose a novel dialogue structure called experience-based dialogue to help a robot present and maintain a good interaction over the long term. This dialogue structure contains a piece of knowledge and a…
Human-Like Guide Robot that Proactively Explains Exhibits
We developed an autonomous human-like guide robot for a science museum. Its identifies individuals, estimates the exhibits at which visitors are looking, and proactively approaches them to provide explanations with gaze autonomously, using our new approach called speak-and-retreat interaction. The robot also performs such relation-building behaviors as greeting visitors by their names and expressing a friendlier attitude to repeat visitors. We co…
