  • Six guidelines for trustworthy, ethical and responsible automation design

Matouš Jelínek, Nadine Schlicker et al.•ARTICLE•Pragmatics and Society•2026

Calibrated trust ( Lee and See 2004 ) is critical for safe and seamless integration of automated systems into society. 1 Users should only rely on a system recommendation when it is actually correct and reject it when it is factually wrong. This requires an accurate trustworthiness assessment, ensuring that the user's perception of the system’s trustworthiness aligns with its actual trustworthiness, allowing users to make informed decisions about…

  • Trust(worthiness) Issues with Trust in Human–Robot Interaction

Linda Onnasch, Eileen Roesler et al.•ARTICLE•ACM Transactions on Human-Robot…•2026

Trust is a very popular concept in Human–Robot Interaction (HRI) to explain why and how people interact with robots. However, the definition of trust and the methods used to study the concept vary widely, often leading to confusion instead of insight. In this position paper, we discuss possible reasons for the confusion and disagreement by reviewing theory and methods. Our main criticism is that HRI researchers have recently taken an oversimplifi…

  • Robot Authority in Human-Robot Teaming

    Open Access•Kerstin S Haring, Kelly Satterfield et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychology•2021•Cited by: 5•References: 24

The anticipated social capabilities of robots may allow them to serve in authority roles as part of human-machine teams. To date, it is unclear if, and to what extent, human team members will comply with requests from their robotic teammates, and how such compliance compares to requests from human teammates. This research examined how the human-likeness and physical embodiment of a robot affect compliance to a robot's request to perseverate utili…

a higher resistance to breakdowns in trust; (b) that these effects were magnified by greater uncertainty; and c) that incorporating human-like trust repair behavior largely erased differences between the agents. Automation anthropomorphism is therefore a critical variable that should be carefully incorporated into any general theory of human–agent trust as well as novel automation design.

  • A Meta-Analysis of Factors Affecting Trust in Human-Robot Interaction

Open Access•Peter A Hancock, Deborah R Billings et al.•ARTICLE•Human Factors: The Journal of the…•2011

Objective: We evaluate and quantify the effects of human, robot, and environmental factors on perceived trust in human-robot interaction (HRI). Background: To date, reviews of trust in HRI have been qualitative or descriptive. Our quantitative review provides a fundamental empirical foundation to advance both theory and practice. Method: Meta-analytic methods were applied to the available literature on trust and HRI. A total of 29 empirical studi…
